Highlands/Beechwood Scrimmage

Featured Replies

This is for a different thread but it is not even close. The size difference alone would wipe out the 84 team.

Why don't we wait until they actually accomplish something?

Get it right, Guidugli did not get hit of bounds, Bankemper just lite him up. First of all, he shouldn't have taken off running and should have been whistled dead in the backfield. The "QB's were off limits" until game situation unless they were actually running the ball but if scrambling and in the grasp, play over/dead. That is why the BHS QB was in an orange jersey but changed when the scrimmage went game situation. The ref should have blown the play dead and Guidugli should have stopped on this particular play.

BHS's QB would handle any type of so called retaliation by the Birds linebackers.

First off, he "was" out of bounds, probably 2 or 3 ft., but I'm sure momentum had a lot to do with it on the defensive side. But why sooooo bitter. One of your own, assuming you are a BHS fan, gave the initial critique of the game and score.

I will say this, no one will beat them in 1A let alone on their regular season schedule from what I saw last evening. Hopefully BHS players and coaches don't read this stuff and think it will be a easy road. By the looks of their lineman and depth, they had better get up early on teams like said before and ride it out.

Because I am not going to spin the truth.

Did Buckley and Bankemper play on the same pee wee team?

I'm not to sure about the hit on Tony, but I thought that the hit on Josh Conner was a little low. It was a legal hit but you would think that a kid as big as #4 was that he would make his initial hit above the knee's on a straight on tackle. Like I said , it was legal but after the hit he laid on Tony I think that Josh didn't expect a hit so low on the body.

Birds D looked very well last night. In spite of the Tigers having them substantially outweighed on the lines and in spite of Bankemper running hard straight ahead, except for about 3 or 4 runs, the Birds pretty much stuffed the Tigers running game from the beginning to the end. Lone Tigers first team score was a very nice qb keeper. Our second team cb got sucked in and the qb ran it down the sidelines for about 60 yds. Nicely executed play and the qb has nice speed. Birds pass D was pretty good also, although I'm not sure the Tigers have spent a lot of time worrying about their passing game. Simons had a pick and Collinsworth and Roller made nice plays to knock down passes. All in all, a good performance by the starting D.

As to the starting O, I thought we looked okay. Conner had several runs of about 10-15 yds where he got open in the Tigers secondary. With Kramer running those last year, they are probably tds. Don't get me wrong, I like Conner as a rb, but he does not have break away speed. Line looked okay, but was inconsistent in their blocking. I'm sure a lot of that has to do with 4 of the 5 interior linemen being new starters this year. Part of it was due to mistakes in the on line blocking calls. And part of it was due to pretty decent line play by the Tigers. #26 for the Tigers in particular looked good. The short passing game looked okay. Not stellar, but not shabby. The CovCath coaches sitting behind me were particularly impressed with #55 (Stein) and made some interesting comments, which I'll keep to myself. Stein is a very spirited player who doesn't mind getting a bit emotional on the field (kind of reminds me of another o lineman last year that I know pretty well:D ) and keeps after his assignment until the whistle is finished blowing. I LOVE offensive linemen with attitudes, bad attitudes.:ylsuper:

Ru, with a couple of exceptions, I thought the Beechwood linemen looked much better (conditioning wise) than in years past. Not as quick as I was expecting based on the other thread, but admittedly better than in years past. Kudos to the big boys for improving their quickness and conditioning.

Only teams capable of challenging the Tigers in A this year will be those that put 11 in the box on D and dare the Tigers to beat them with the pass. Since special team play was not part of the scrimmage, other than punts blown dead upon catch, I don't know if that will be an Achilles Heel for the Tigers. They do need to improve their punt snaps as the Birds blocked one punt and came very, very close to blocking a couple of others. Will be interesting to see if smaller quicker A teams can use the special teams to their advantage.

As to the JVs, as one would expect when an AAA size team is playing an A size team (as the talented sophomores on the Tigers team were probably subbing into the starting O and D), it was not close. Nice play on both sides of the ball by the Birds. Too many kids did well to name, but I want to point out the running of Tyler Fennell, since his running always gets overshadowed by Collinsworth and Alford in that class. Tyler looked really good running the ball. Not big in stature, but big in heart, he's improved by leaps and bounds since the FTJFL days. Good job young man.

The Male scrimmage will really tell the Birds a lot about themselves.

Where is the Highlands/Male scrimmage game being played?

It's at Highlands

Thanks. Dang!

Concerning the bolded part of my above post, I don't want anyone to think that the CovCath coaches said anything disrespectful about Stein. Quite the contrary. The CovCath coaches were quite complimentary of the Birds and our field. Sounded like most of them must have come over with Brossart from Ohio. Is that correct? If anyone misinterpreted the bolded part, sorry about that. I should have been clearer.

I agree lneck, the Beechwood linemen were in much better shape (weight wise) than I have seen in several years. They still need to work on their conditioning but they pass the look test and then some plus 10.

I agree it will be interested to see how well coached Class 1A teams attack the Tigers.

I agree. I was right about on top of that one, and it was a no doubter. But, such is to be expected in a first scrimmage.

I was on the other side of the field (in other words too far away to know for sure) but I thought the hit was suspect at best (meaning on the limit of being late) and man was it a big hit.

Someone mentioned in an earlier thread that the Beechie lineman although big and very smart may lack meanness. sp?? Was that evident in the scrimmage? Were there any pancake blocks by either team?

Also, nobody mentioned Highlands big fella Alex Hempfling in this thread, how did this top prospect do against the big kids from Beechwood.

The hit was definitely out of bounds. Tony had both feet beyond the line when he got hit. Not too tough to "lite someone up" as you put it, when they are decelerating because they have reached what is supposed to be the safety of the sideline. Nice touch on your part to identify the late hitter. I thought it better not to.
