While Hal certainly didn't put up much recruiting competition for UofL, you can't take credit away from Jon L, Petrion, etc. UofL has built a very good football team, no doubt about it. It may not be the national powerhouse that some UofL fans want to say it is , but they're very good.

 

I think UK's misfortunes helped UofL's rise, but UofL would still be pretty good no matter what happened in Lexington.

Mumme and Basset burned alot of bridges with high schools in this state. That is a fact. Did it help UofL? Probably so. How much is debatable but I am sure it had an effect.

These threads crack me up! Let's see Hawaii passed for a bunch of yards and Air Force rushed for a bunch of yards. Wow your defense must be bad. Do you ever watch college football? Hawaii throws on everybody and Air Force runs on everybody. At the end of the day trying to knock the SEC is like trying to knock Michael Jordan! I'm sure I could dig some stats up that show him scoring very little points. I'm also smart enough not to argue that he was a bad offensive player because of a few stats!

Louisville plays WVU in confrence and that's it. Rutgers has had one good year since the pyramids were built and now they are like an LSU or Georgia? Give me a break! Louisville has built an AWSOME program but if they are put in the SEC and UK goes to the Big East then I would put my house up that Louisville struggles more while UK finishes better.

UofL is where there are today because of Tom Jurich, what John L started (I hate the guy but I give credit where it's due) and what Petrino finished.

Curious to know what you think of Big Ten defenses after FL shredded OSU in the title match? Also, USC dismantled Michigan in the Rose.

I think the Big Ten was WAY down last year myself. I also think Florida and USC would shred most defenses in the Nation! The Big Ten was weak though.

WOW! Wasn't OSU no.1 all year and Michigan no.2. Lets see, the Big ten was down. OSU was number 1 and Michigan was number 2 until after the SEC Championship. Wisconsin beat SEC runner-up Arkansas in the capital one bowl. Yep, it was a down year in the Big Ten. :rolleyes:

Obviously this is one of those issues that neither of us can prove ourselves right. My logic is: didn't UL get some pretty good Ky football players to by pass UK and come to UL that didn't go to UK because of the UK situation?

Brohm is a no brainer to go to UL because of his brother coaching there. I wonder if Bush would have went there if UK hadn't been messed up and had been doing well. Playing in the SEC is generally much more attractive than playing in the conference UL was playing in at the time. I know the Grover kid chose Purdue over UK because he didn't feel "comfortable" with Mumme and Bassett. I could go into details, but won't. While Grover didn't directly help UL, it made UK weaker, thus helping UL recruit the Ky kids. Wasn't there a very good running back from Lex that also spurned UK because Mumme/Bassett who initially went to UT and ended up at UL? Can any one else think of players that you would have thought would have helped UK that took a pass because of Mumme/Bassett and the problems they created at UK?

 

Again, I'm not trying to discredit Jurich or Petrino. They deserve props. I just think Mumme and Bassett made it easier for them to have the success they had. To what degree is probably impossible to quantify.

Did I ever say the defenses were bad? Ever? No, I didn't. I posted the stats. Stats which illustrate that OOC offenses were statistical superior in one way or another than the SEC offenses. Therefore, don't tell me OOC offenses would be nonexistent in the SEC.

This goes back to the last point. I guarantee you that if I compared Air forces or Hawaii's offensive stats to an SEC team's I would hear the comment, "they don't play in the SEC". Well, it turns out, when they do, they still dominate.

Because people seem to be so keen on stating that SEC offenses are underrated because of SEC defenses, I thought I'd share some facts about the SEC defenses.

 

LSU- Four Schools ran over 100yrds vs LSU, only one was an SEC school.

 

Alabama- Hawaii passed for 350yrds. Three schools ran for over 200yrds vs the Tide only one was an SEC school.

 

Arkansas- USC made them look UGLY

 

Auburn- Represented the SEC well. But Tulane passed more on Auburn than any other team.

 

Mississippi ST- West Virginia showed them what a Big East offense is like by running for 314yrds, the best SEC team obtained only 128.

 

Mississippi - Missouri put up 471 off yrds, more than any other team.

 

Georgia- Best team to run against the Dawgs were the mighty Buffaloes of Colorado.

 

South Carolina- Wofford 290 yrds on the ground, better than any SEC team. Houston 392 passing yrds

 

Florida- Southern Miss averaged as many yrds per carry as the best SEC team.

 

Tennessee- Air Force had 281yrds on the ground, more than any SEC team

 

Vandy- Two schools ran over two hundred yrds vs Vandy, they didn't belong to the SEC

 

UK- Do you even want to go there, UK looked much better in conference than out of it.

USC got ahold of Arkansas early. I do strongly believe had they played later in the year it would have been a totally different game IMO
