The truth about SEC defenses.

Featured Replies

Because people seem to be so keen on stating that SEC offenses are underrated because of SEC defenses, I thought I'd share some facts about the SEC defenses.

LSU- Four Schools ran over 100yrds vs LSU, only one was an SEC school.

Alabama- Hawaii passed for 350yrds. Three schools ran for over 200yrds vs the Tide only one was an SEC school.

Arkansas- USC made them look UGLY

Auburn- Represented the SEC well. But Tulane passed more on Auburn than any other team.

Mississippi ST- West Virginia showed them what a Big East offense is like by running for 314yrds, the best SEC team obtained only 128.

Mississippi - Missouri put up 471 off yrds, more than any other team.

Georgia- Best team to run against the Dawgs were the mighty Buffaloes of Colorado.

South Carolina- Wofford 290 yrds on the ground, better than any SEC team. Houston 392 passing yrds

Florida- Southern Miss averaged as many yrds per carry as the best SEC team.

Tennessee- Air Force had 281yrds on the ground, more than any SEC team

Vandy- Two schools ran over two hundred yrds vs Vandy, they didn't belong to the SEC

UK- Do you even want to go there, UK looked much better in conference than out of it.

LSU and Florida both scored 41 points in their BCS bowls. That was 13.5 and 17 more than they averaged against SEC opponents.

UofL scored 24 points in their bowl game; more than 10 fewer that they averaged in the Big East.

So the AVERAGE SEC defense was (much) tougher than two of the best non SEC teams.

Funny that none of your stats mention scoring. The point of the defense IS to stop the other team from scoring.

I guess it is still bothering some that most thought that U.L. wouldn't do as good in the SEC as in the Big East? :D You can come up with all the stats and numbers that you want and try and convince yourself that U.L. could win the SEC and that still wouldn't make it true. Truth is that U.L. had better be thankful that they are in the Big East and only have WVU and maybe Rutgers (maybe) to seriously challenge them U.L. running the table this season (and I don't think that they will) is their only possible chance of making the NC game for a long time, maybe for good.

RRR,

Did any SEC teams make the top 20 in total defense?

They most certainly did,

against SEC offenses:D

I get it. If a conference has good team offenses, they don't get any credit because they don't play defense, and if a conference has good team defenses, they don't get any credit because the offenses are poor.

I now remember why I stopped coming to the college board a few months ago.

You guys are getting comical. Almost every expert in the nation say the SEC is the deepest conference year in and year out and lets face it the Big East is good at the top and thats it. You can twist and turn it however you want. The SEC is at a whole other level than the Big East!

Bingo.

I didn't even read through the stats until now. It's more than comical if this is all you can come up with to prove how bad SEC defenses are. Most of them point out one or two games... who doesn't have a bad game here or there?

Maybe, just maybe the SEC offenses fare poorly against each other due to familiarity and the fact that the conference games are generally bigger games for them than the Tulane's and Hawaii's of the college football world.

Out of conference teams see an opportunity to make a name for themselves while the SEC teams are looking at these games as a tune up for conference play. Add in the fact that more conference games receive national coverage and are rivalry games and you get emotions running high which, IMO, is good for defense and bad for offense.

Face it, U of L is a very good team, but if they played in the SEC, they would be a second tier program.

The SEC is obviously a step up from the Big East, nobody has said any different but that does not mean that UofL is a step down.

I believe that the SEC has THE BEST defense (top to bottom) in the Nation....but I also feel that their offenses are outdated, and average at best.

Historically, yes. Last year, no. This coming season, no. The future, who knows...

Second tier is where UK ended last season...U of L has moved beyond that level. The top of the SEC every year? NO...but no one is.
