Who will be Mr. Football 2007?

Featured Replies

I don't know scribe, last season I personally thought that Victor Anderson was the favorite prior to kickoff. But conversely, it was still a three horse race in the mind of most between Anderson, Beaumont, and Minnifield.

This year I really can't say off hand who would be the favorite, or even if there are clear coupling of individuals.

EJ Fields at Frankfort has the potential to stake his claim. He is a D-1 recruit (which always helps), will have a schedule which will alow him to win alot of games and put up good stats, his team should be a definite state title contender in their class, and his Central KY geographical location will help in media attention. But, on the flip side he is playing at a very small school and won't be facing the top tier competition to judge him against players from bigger schools.

I personally will be a huge Shawn Grimm supporter. The halfback from Johnson Central who led the state in most rushing categories last season is not your typical EKY hype without hope. Grimm led JC to a 13-1 record and state semi's appearance in arguable the toughest class pound for pound in KY last season, 3A. Though JC did not play a tough schedule in the regular season, Grimm did not disappoint in big games as he played well vs. Ashland, ran all over Rockcastle County, and capped off the season by gaining over 200 yards against eventual state champion CovCath. Johnson Central has attempted to upgrade their schedule by adding traditional small class powerhouse and Top 5 3A Belfry on the road, a pre-season top 5 3A team in Louisville Central, as well as traditionally competitive NKY Conner, in addition to playing Ashland. Grimm's biggest porblem wll be garnering media attention, but in terms of qualifications from a statistical viewpoint few will be better.

I would say that Shawn is without a doubt one of the finest running backs in the state if not the best. He can run all over everyone and gain 3000 yards, but the sad truth is that with the media making the pic the support is just not on this side of the state. Now on the other hand if the Coachs were making the pick like they do in track I would say he would be the top contender. Russell just had a Mr. Track and that is picked by the Coachs. I hope I'm really wrong and he gets it.

Now we would not want the Coach,s to pick Mr. Football would we. After all they are the one's that know the players. Sorry for the sarcasm. My prediction is that the Mr. Football will come from the center of the state with the larger media.

Cory Farris has to at the top of most peoples list

I think Farris will have another typical "big season" as far as BC runners are concerned.

1,500 yards the last two years. Northern Kentucky leading rusher the last two years I believe. 15 touchdowns last year how you say he is not up there in the top ten.

How has Farris fared against the good NKY and Cincy teams? (CC, HHS, X, Elder, Moe, etc.)

I do not believe D1 offers should factor in if you are a Mr. Football candiate or not.

How does it not? If a kid gets a D1 offer I would say hes a good player!

I pick Aaron Boyd

Boone dropped Highlands from the schedule a couple of years ago. Tankles got tired of having his hat handed to him by his alma mater. I don't remember Boone playing any Cincy teams last year either. I could be wrong about that.

Scribe

Give me some clarification on Alan Williams and the others that didnt make it into your lists of 10. Being from out west I was espically wanting to know why Williams got cut

Just a personal list really.

Cole has it tough because he played a 1A schedule last year and put up good numbers. However, I have never been one to punish a kid because of the school he attends and what class they play in.

I think Farris' numbers came against better competition. I think Williams is in the top three running backs in the state along with Grimm and Farris.

I'm really looking at what kind of year Fields will have. He is a dual threat and he will get overlooked because he plays at a 1A school.

Wallace and Boyd are two names that have been picking up a lot of steam on the recruiting front lately and have had good summers. Boyd reminds me of Chase Minnifield by what he could do on both sides of the ball.

It really came down to Cashen, Williams, and Matthews for the 10th spot. I like what Matthews did against the teams he played against.

I will say this for Alan. He will get a chance to help his cause by playing Hopkinsville, Apollo, Henderson County, Mayfield, and Bowling Green this year. There is no other real Mr. Football threat (other than Wallace) west of I-65.

ukfan it should not be about where the young man is getting offers from it should be about who played the best football that season sometimes the best player in the state does not get the big offers to the D1 schools for various reasons.

It shouldn't matter what class a player is in or how well he is being recruited. It truly should be based on one kids ability to play the game and how well he does that against the competition he has.

You can't leave Shane Isreal from Lexington Catholic off the list. All he did his Soph year is rush for 4 or 5 TD's in the state championship game against Bowling Green. He was a stud last year and he will be behind one of Lex Cath's biggest lines ever that has experience.

He would probably be my top vote as he will play the toughest competition so week in week out we should here about him.

I think the top ten candidates now are (in class order)...

1. E.J. Fields - QB (Frankfort)

2. Leland Banks - QB (Central)

3. John Cole - WR (Somerset)

4. Ryan Wallace - TE (Bowling Green)

5. Shawn Grimm - RB (Johnson Central)

6. Cory Farris - RB (Boone County)

7. Brandon Newman - DL (PRP)

8. Dexter Heyman - DE (Male)

9. Aaron Boyd - WR (Henry Clay)

10. Alex Matthews - QB (Shelby County)

Looks Like a great List.:thumb:

Be on the Lookout for J.r. 6'6 WR Leonard Macon/Danville.Great Hands and a big target...

I really like Cashen's chances this season with a very experinced Corbin team. They should be fun to keep up with this season!
