As they say. "the grass always looks greener on the other side." Both of you who commented on JV coaches are so on the mark. And if the JV coach wants your job, they can sometimes even go behind your back and talk badly about you and make themselves look so caring and thoughtful. Unless you've been a head coach, you have NO idea the crap you have to put up with. So, is this the case at St. Pat's? I don't have any idea but those of us who have coached, have seen it happen a lot. And when the JV coach moves up they quickly find out you can't be "buddy-buddy" with the parents AND run the ship the way you want it run. The two are totally opposite. Like I once heard from a coach one time - "Give me a team of orphans and I'll win nearly every game." GET THE POINT!?

I have had situations where the player was afraid to stand up to dad so I took the heat for that player. To this dad, dad thinks she quit playing because of me when in reality she was tired of hearing it from dad and that was the reason why she wanted to quit. But she didn't have the guts to tell dad. So she told him, she hated me.

 

 

Wow...that is sad. It was generous and quite selfless of you to help out in that situation.

If that is not the issue here, why does it seem to be the focus of some posts? All this talk of assistant coaches undermining head coaches and how the assistant doesn't know what the head coach has to deal with until they themselves are the head coach. Sure sounds like a lot of you think that this is all about an assistant coach who wants to have the head coach job. Did anyone ever stop and think that maybe, just maybe the school, the players and the parents weren't happy with the program itself and that changes needed to be made???

 

No disrespect to Mr. Orme but maybe the program does need a change and the only way to see if that is the case is to change, for better or worse.

 

And to ladiesballcoach...I think it is unfortunate that your player handled the situation the way she did, because maybe that player would have kept playing if someone had the guts to be honest with her dad. Maybe he would have backed off and maybe not, but honesty is always the best policy.

Loyalty?, what decade are some of these posters living? This isn't Mayberry anymore. There is no loyalty in factory jobs,retail jobs,etc. That's why so many are willing to take pay cuts in order to retire at 55 or 58. Loyalty goes both ways for coaches. How many coaches have taken jobs at other schools because they have a good class or an upcoming good class,then drop that school like a hot potato when those kids graduate because they don't want to rebuild(that is what coaching is by the way).

You know, when you go back to the first years of St. Patrick girls basketball, I don't think you can really compare those records. I remember those years and the thing is, most of those girls had only played ball for a couple of years if any.

Somebody needs to go back and see when St. Pat actually started having grade school girls teams. When they started a high school team most of those girls were just learning the fundamentals, as opposed to recent years when they start at the third and fourth grade level (or younger if they play at the boys club starting in kindergarden).

Once again, just using an example to illustrate a point that some coaches, teachers, administrators, or whatever might be willing to stay at the same place for 79 years, others only 1 or 2 years.

 

I liked Tim Sullivan's style and enthusiasm. And at the time, it seemed like he was pretty much welcomed with open arms down there. Maybe not.

 

You know what? On further reflection, maybe St. Pat is a horrible place full of horrible people. Maybe they should just send everyone home and padlock the doors.

 

At the very least, I think I'll yank my kids out of there tomorrow. I have truly been blind all these years. Thanks for enlightening me!

The thing you don't realize is Coach Ormes was not interested in coaching anywhere else. He loved the kids and what the school stood for. He would have retired just like Coach Turner did. You need to get a clue. This did involve some parents wanting Coach Douglas to be head coach. If you think otherwise then you are clueless.

 

That shows loyalty and dedication. Two attributes almost completely lost in today's world of coaching.

I totally agree with you Pressrow.. Loyalty doesnt hardly mean anything in todays coacing carousel. People are at programs helping for 10+ years or so and then the school will go outside the school to hire a coach.. I believe loyalty should mean a lot more.. How does everyone else feel?

Loyalty should mean a lot more. Many coaches jump around to better themselves and to try to make more money.

I understand how the administration may have went wrong in this decision but I don't think the school is going to lose anything in hiring Elaine Douglas. She is a great coach and will take the school in the direction they want to go in.

Elaine Douglas played high school basketball with me at Bracken Co and was very knowledgeable of the game back then.

Her jr. high teams have always been successful and it will carry over to varsity action

Would have loved to seen Elaine(as well as her brother Chris) stay in Bracken County. Two go-getters that gets things done, something Bracken County sorely lacks.

Bracken Co has a thing for letting coaches get out of the county, Jason Hinson coached there 7 years, and never got a chance to coach Jv. If your not a teacher at Bracken they will never give you a chance. They would rather hire someone with no experiance coaching at all then give someone a chance that loved the school that had worked there 7 years.

John does have a daughter that plays basketball. As far as coaching goes, I dont know if he is interested or not.
