I totally agree with you Pressrow.. Loyalty doesnt hardly mean anything in todays coacing carousel. People are at programs helping for 10+ years or so and then the school will go outside the school to hire a coach.. I believe loyalty should mean a lot more.. How does everyone else feel?

Coaches need to have it too.

 

Some coaches jump around like they are a Mexican Jumping Bean. If you have no problem with coaches riding the coaching carousel to, in their perception, better themselves, you can't have much on the schools doing the same, in their perception.

For someone who added so much to the program, one would hope Coach Ormes would have been given better reasons than "to move in another direction." IMO, it WAS done because parents complained and will continue to complain because they knew eventually they will get their way. Kinda like blackmail - "You either get rid of him or my daughter is not going to play." The almighty dollar and parents have struck another win for their side. So coaches, if you are at St. Pat's you'd better do what the parents want you to do or you're history. And I know for a fact this is NOT unique to St.Pat's - it's happening everywhere. I'd love to see an administrator step up to the plate and tell these parents that if they don't like it, take their kid off the team and go somewhere else. I would applaud such a warrior. But many of these adminisitors go limp when pressed with the issues and could care less about the coach and all he's done. All those parents do is teach their kids that if you whine enough, eventually you will get your way. That's why we are riddled with people suing other people - NO ONE wants to take responsibility for their actions. And parents who complain? Do you think that maybe it might be you kids attitude or lack of talent that could be the issue? OF COURSE NOT! Just keep those blinders on so the only thing you see is what you want to see. I still back Jerry 100%.

Thank you All In ....I couldn't remember coach Starns' name. I wanted to bring that up about how he was passed over and it being an issue at MCHS and yet life goes on and so does basketball. I don't even remember it making the headlines when Starns was overlooked. I think news of that came when O'Hearn was named as coach and it was all about

 

As far as those who want to dis Mrs. Douglas because you think she doesn't have experience because she is only a Jr High coach, I think you should look back at Mr. Ormes coaching experience. I'm not sure he had ever coached before being contracted to coach at St. Patrick. If anyone can correct me on that, please do. I remember him being a referee. And yet he was given a chance and did well.

 

And can someone verify that Danny McKay coached St. Pat girls???? I really don't remember that. After all it was the 80's and I'm trying to forget the

80's...maybe I blocked that out along with the "New Kids on The Block". LOL

I dont think dissing Coach Douglas is the issue here... I think people are saying that they way the whole situation was handled wrong and to do a loyal Coach like Coach Ormes has been like that is what has everyone upset.

 

I for one know Coach Douglas is a good coach, but those loyal to Coach Ormes isn't going to like the replacement no matter who it is.

Yes, it should be important. But on the flip side, what if a coach (like Mr. Ormes, for example) decided that he wanted to quit? Do you think anything would have stopped him?? Would we be wringing our hands and condemning him for his lack of loyalty if he did?

Does anybody remember the boys' varsity coach we had between Lex Turner and Jason Hinson? If you don't, I can understand why; as he was only there for about 3 seconds before he "transferred" to the County. He didn't stick around there too long, either...

Yeah I remember his name.. Coach Sullivan. I agree with most of what you are saying. I just believe that he should have been given an opportunity to improve on what the higher ups say. They decide after a few complaints that they are going to go in a different direction. Give Coach Ormes another year to see if he can fix the problem, dont just not renew his contract on the spot. He should have been able to go out on his own terms.

 

As a teacher, we are evaluated all the time.. After an evaluation, tenured or not, they meet with you and tell you things to work on and improve. Then they give you time to do it. It isnt like its your first evaluation as a rookie teacher and your principal says I am going to let you go even though its September because of lack of classroom management.. Same principle....

If you were to talk to Coach Sullivan he would tell you the real reason why he left. He was tired of dealing with the administration that was there. Coach Sullivan loved the oppurtunity that was given to him while being at St. Pat. He has nothing to do with this situation so leave him out of it.

Once again, just using an example to illustrate a point that some coaches, teachers, administrators, or whatever might be willing to stay at the same place for 79 years, others only 1 or 2 years.

 

I liked Tim Sullivan's style and enthusiasm. And at the time, it seemed like he was pretty much welcomed with open arms down there. Maybe not.

 

You know what? On further reflection, maybe St. Pat is a horrible place full of horrible people. Maybe they should just send everyone home and padlock the doors.

Pick your daughter up from practice to hear complaints, invest time any money into having your child on this team? If you answer "no", then maybe you don't know all the facts. I don't even know all the facts but I have more sense than to believe this happened because a "few" parents complained

 

Some of you make it sound like the administration at St. Patricks are bumbling idiots, but from my experience I have found they don't do what is popular, they do what is best for the school. The school comes first, before sports. Again, I will say that I feel 100% sure that any complaints made by parents or students were not the reason for a coach not being asked back, but probably the reason for the school to take a closer look into those complaints and make a decision based on their findings. Anyone who would believe that a few parents complained and they let a caoch go really needs to get a clue.

 

And as for loyalty...I agree if Jerry Orme had left on his own, no matter what the circumstances it wouldn't have been looked at as if he had no loyalty. Would it get a front page story? If he had quit the day of the season opener it wouldn't have gotten this much attention.

The thing you don't realize is Coach Ormes was not interested in coaching anywhere else. He loved the kids and what the school stood for. He would have retired just like Coach Turner did. You need to get a clue. This did involve some parents wanting Coach Douglas to be head coach. If you think otherwise then you are clueless.

I do not know Coach Douglas so this post is not aimed at her in any regard but a general observation about assistant coaches.

 

They are always loved because they are not the bottom line who tells the parents no or has to discipline a player.

 

A good number of times when they move from assistant to varsity and have to become the bad guy at times, they forget how to coach in the eyes of many.

Assistant Coach is normally the good guy because at practice when the head coach gets on a player it is the assistant coaches job to pick that player up. Encourage them..

 

Also, 100% correct LBBC! The assistant coach is once again the good guy beacuse they dont tell the parents NO and dont have the overall say on the disciplining of a player.

Great point URIT. It is the assistant coaches job to be the good cop when the head coach has to discipline or get on a player for poor effort.

 

I have had situations where the player was afraid to stand up to dad so I took the heat for that player. To this dad, dad thinks she quit playing because of me when in reality she was tired of hearing it from dad and that was the reason why she wanted to quit. But she didn't have the guts to tell dad. So she told him, she hated me.

A school with a strong administration does not care. If I was 0-20 for 3 years in a row, they would not have to ask me to resign, I would be gone. AS long as the kids are treated well, and the program enjoys moderate success, most coaches can stay as long as they wish. Coach Ormes was doing a great job, at a program that many though of as a W on their schedule.

 

My point was what is next? My son/daughter did not get a 4.0 in school, I want that teacher fired? If not I am taking my money and going else where.

 

Last time I checked, St. Pat was not Lex Cath. Many parents send their kids to St. pat for an education bulit on religious beliefs. I know, I went there for 12 years.

 

My problem is when inmates are running the asylum, or in this case parents that think their sons and daughters are allstars.
