John does have a daughter that plays basketball. As far as coaching goes, I dont know if he is interested or not.

If he does have any interest, I recommend he submit to a full battery of mental tests to judge his sanity.

 

Why move from the stands where you are 100% correct as a coach to the bench where at best those in the stands will think you are 50/50 in your decision-making?

After recently talking to John Chamberlain, he confirmed to me that he has no interest in returning to the hardwood. He is enjoying being a successful referee where he has officiated 13 state tournaments and even some games at the collegiate level.

I think the 50/50 is WAY too generous. Those in the stands are at least 90% right and of course a select few are ALWAYS right and they will tell you so. If you did things their way, you would NEVER lose a game. The players win the games and the coaches lose the games and that's the way almost all of those people in the stands see it. Many will look like some of the horses in the Ky. Derby this weekend - a complete set of blinders where all they see if directly in front of them and nothing else. I think what you and I are touching on is the reason why coaches come across as arrogant. It is not arrogance but you have to coach with blinders, as you say.

 

You are going to get a bunch of unsolicited advice and you are not going to use about 98% of it. So you don't act on it so you become "arrogant" in their opinion because you didn't act on their advice. You think you know everything because you didn't agree with them.

 

And a coach has to make a decision in about the first 15 seconds of a timeout and be decisive with it. And confident that they are making the right call. There has to be a degree of confidence that you CAN and WILL make the right call.

If you know the coach and you get your info from him, do you think his side of the story could be just that, his side of the story. After all could he be a little bitter? Most people I know who are let go or fired are bitter, and it's never their fault. That's natural. Do you know the other side? Why do you think the school was so unjust in letting a coach go? Just asking because I would like to know where you get your info and what you have based your opinions on?

Bracken Co has a thing for letting coaches get out of the county, Jason Hinson coached there 7 years, and never got a chance to coach Jv. If your not a teacher at Bracken they will never give you a chance. They would rather hire someone with no experiance coaching at all then give someone a chance that loved the school that had worked there 7 years.

I agree, John Chamberlain is a good referee. I think he's very fair, and he really seems to enjoy doing it.

You DO NOT have to be a certified teacher to hold the varsity coaching position in any sport in a KY public high school.

You do realize that relatives are not the most subjective viewers of a program, don't you? As you indicated that the coach will have his side of the story, parents, aunts, uncles the like see their child in much different eyes than realistically they usually are.

 

Example, when I told a parent that their 5'4" daughter was not a candidate to play at Tennessee and Uconn, they could not understand why I would say that. BECAUSE IT WAS TRUE. They were a DIII player. That was the level of their talent and their height. They did not want to hear that. They envisioned their daughter playing DI and it wasn't going to happen. It created such a rift and their daughter did not become the player that they thought she should that the daughter ended up not even playing her senior year.

 

Another example came from a parent who indicated that she always knew that her daughter was a good player. But when they spent the summer playing serious AAU ball and took the floor against players like Candyce Parker she came to understand that for our county, her daughter was a good player. But out there, there were a whole nother level of players that she knew nothing about. And her daughter was not that level. That brought her back to reality on where her daughter stood and I think it helped her enjoy her daughter's athletic career even more, instead of having unrealistic expectations.

You are right.. Where coaches have their side, so do the parents and other relatives!

I don't mean that question in the way that you took it. I don't mean in the respect that relatives want more playing time for their daughter because they think that their child is better than that. I mean relatives that would know what goes on in the locker room or at practice...not anything to do with their childs ability. It was not a question about the physical aspect of being on the team...more the mental and emotional aspect. Does that make sense at all??

My daughter tells me what is said and what goes on in the locker room and I am almost positive that it gets misconstrued before she gets home. I came to realize last season after a discussion with the head coach that what is said and what is brought home isn't always the same.
