The "best" 16 don't get to play in the state tournament anyway. Sort of like the NCAA tournament.

 

I have had 3 sons play on small public school teams. They had wonderful season, good careers, and won a lot of games, but never came close to playing in the "big" state tournament, and the class A state doesnt even compare. I suppose I could have done as other, and transferred them to a team that was sure to go, so they could get that "experience" I read about so much, buth I never felt that was fair or was also a cheap thrill. I felt you should go to school, where you should go to school, and that was in the district you lived in. I know I am arguing with "experts" but also ones who have never seen their sons broken hearted from getting beat by schools that are huge, that recruit, or whatever advantage they can get, or myself, never getting to be a part of my kids being a part of "the greatest show in hoops", but I realistically feel, the majority of kids who play to reach this dream, after they are trhough, wish there was a classification to equalize the competition. I am sure from what I read, a lot of the people who disagree with this: 1. never played a game of h.s. ball, 2. was on a team which qualified for the state tournament, or 3. cheered from the stands of a large team which was in the tournament. So get on me for my point of view, which I know will never change yours, but I assure you, that a lot of people who have fought the good fight, don't agree with the way it works now.

This used to be one of my favorite stats when Caldwell County was a member of the 5th District, with Crittenden County, Lyon County, Trigg County and Livingston Central: If you combined those five schools into one big school (I still haven't worked out a good name for it ) that school still wouldn't be as big as Henderson County.

 

That's the mountain that some small schools have to overcome in basketball, baseball, softball, soccer, volleyball, etc. Can't saying it can't be done, but it sure doesn't happen very often.

Yes, poor ol' Henderson has only played in five of the last six regional championship games, twice losing to the second-largest school in the 2nd Region. However, Henderson went to state in 1990, 1996 and 1999.

 

Dawson Springs' last Sweet 16 trip? 1955. Lyon County? 1951. Caldwell County? 1964. Webster County? Never.

If you class basketball, I think you would run the risk of the private schools dominating all the classes, but the largest. Schools like Lex. Catholic, Cov. Catholic, UHA, Bishop Brossart, Rose Hill, Owensboro Catholic, etc. would dominate there classes.

 

Excellent point! The plan would have to include seperation of public and private also, which we have seen is not going to happen.

This thread is nothing but wasted time. Never gonna happen. You could debate untill you are blue in the face. There is a special feeling about going to Rupp in mid March. Every kids dream in the state. Is Kentucky the only one who doesn't class now? I didn't read every post in this thread. Excuse me in advance if i'm repeating something.

"Destroyed" is way too strong a word and terribly inaccurate. It is fair to say that the move to four classes did a lot to diminish interest and attendance, especially during the postseason.

 

On the other hand, a move to two classes could have worked well, just as it has in Illinois for 35 years.

Sure it does, to all the big schools. If you classify some sports, do them all. That simple.
