The 16 best teams make it to Rupp every year............gimme a break!

Here is a further breakdown by region. There have been several people point out small schools that have had success at Rupp Arena. Are they the exception or the rule?

 

The 16 regions appear below. The percentage of 3A and 4A teams in that region are in parenthesis. The last two schools of 1A and 2A size to win the region and advance to Rupp are listed along with the year they went. Also listed (if it isn't one of those two), was the last 1A or 2A size school champ to win a game at Rupp.

 

1st Region (25%) - Lone Oak (2003) and Carlisle County (2002). Last school to win was Carlisle County in 1983.

 

2nd Region (38%) - UHA (2003 semifinals) and Trigg County (1997).

 

3rd Region (50%) - Central City (1989) and Caneyville (1968 semifinals).

 

4th Region (56%) - Russellville (2001 semifinals) and Metcalfe County (1985).

 

5th Region (41%) - Elizabethtown (2005 2nd round) and Caverna (2004)

 

6th Region (55%) - DeSales (1979) and Shawnee (1976 second round).

 

7th Region (65%) - Moore (1994 semifinals) and Ahrens (1978).

 

8th Region (38%) - Carroll County (1972) and Henry County (1962)

 

9th Region (38%) - St. Henry (2003) and NCC (2000). Last school to win was Holy Cross in 1994.

 

10th Region (47%) - Bishop Brossart (2000 2nd round) and Fleming County (1999).

 

11th Region (70%) - Lexington Catholic (1992 finals - were 1A at the time) and Harrodsburg (1960).

 

12th Region (38%) - Wayne County (2004) and Mercer County (2000). Last school to win was Harrodsburg in 1996.

 

13th Region (31%) - Corbin (2005 2nd round) and Cumberland (2003).

 

14th Region (18%) - Hazard (2006) and Powell County (2003). Last school to win a game was Whitesburg in 2002.

 

15th Region (18%) - Shelby Valley (2005) and South Floyd (2001). Last team to win a game was Pikeville in 1999.

 

16th Region (25%) - Morgan County (2004) and Rose Hill (2003 2nd round).

Hopkinsville was a district runner-up in 1985 and won the state title. I seem to remember someone else doing it since then.

 

They didn't win a state championship but came close, however, Apollo didn't win a district championship last year either.

I've read several people on here who like the system the way it is. And most of them come from regions where large schools make up less than 35% of the total teams -- most notably the 13th, 14th, 15th, and 16th regions.

 

The regions where more than 50% of the schools are large schools seem to make a case for inequity of the smaller schools.

I would guess if you have classes, you would need to do away with districts and start with regional play in postseason.

 

I think, with 16-18 team regions, it is time to do that anyway. Make it a week-two week event and play down to 1 regional champ. Districts used to have 10-16 teams in each of them back in the 30's and 40's when DISTRICT play was originated. I'm sure they would have never been designed to suit just 4 or 5 teams.

Lone Oak won in 2005, actually, and their enrollment (best I recall) was back in the 3A range by then.

Edmonson County was district runner up and then won the state in what? 1975? If that had not happend that year, we would be classed right now. The vote was to take place in the spring following that state tournament, and would have overwhelmingly gone classification due to the Louisville domination, but after Edmonson's miracle run, the vote changed. Ask Bo Bo Davenport. He will tell you that he saved Kentucky basketball, and I used to agree with him. But lately, if you aren't private, or huge, you have no chance. Eveyone says they would rather get a chance to play in the big tourney rather than win the Class A? Well, who wouldnt. But the facts are, go through the regions and see if it isn't the same old names, same old teams for most part...Tilghman, Christian Co, O-boro, Warren Central, Ballard, Scott Co, every year, every year. Face it, there are no Jimmy Chitwoods out there, and no Hoosier stories are going to take place ever again the way the tournament is now.

They won several times but I was taking the last two different small schools. That region was a toughie, but not surprisingly so.

But in the 6th, 7th and 11th regions, small schools have always been few and far between.

The change in busing of Louisville schools in the 1970s changed things for good in the 6th and 7th regions.

And that differs from the present setup HOW?????

 

16 teams are playing in Rupp next week unless you didn't realize that Sweet 16 meant 16 teams.

 

And surely you don't think that the 16 teams there next week ARE the best 16 teams in the state. They are not. They simply won their regional tournament and earned their way there.

Elliott County class A played in the all A Classic at Richmond(and also for the last 3 or 4 years) and are going to Rupp and representing the 16th region in the State Tournament . I'll bet if you asked every single player on the Elliott County team which state tournament they would rather play in that to a man the answer would be "We want Rupp"!

The Class "A" really does not mean anywhere near the same as Going to rupp. Making it to rupp is every kids dream when they are growing up so IMO if you take away the sweet 16 from these kids then you would be taking away that dream and hope that we all shared when we played highshool ball in KY. This is Just My opinion though.

You are missing a vital point. The class A championship would be played IN RUPP ARENA. Would you prefer, as a Class A school, to be playing IN RUPP ARENA for the state basketball title versus a school of similar size and stature of Elliott County or PRP or Lex Catholic?
