Cumberland is a good example of why we should not go to a classed state tournament. Cumberland(1A) almost beat South Laurel(4A) in the Region and could very well have won the region this year. Cumberland(1A) must be considered a favorite and may very well win the 13th region next year. There are other small schools like Cumberland who somehow manage to have very good teams even though they have a small enrollment. All it takes is a good basketball program and good coaching. If the best talent always won we wouldn't have any reason to play the state tournament.In the 2003 region 13 tournament Cumberland won it all and beat 4A Bell County along the way.

Can you name the last Class A or Class AA size school to advance to the final four of the Sweet 16? What about the last non-private A or AA school? What about the last A or AA county school?

A ... University Heights in 2005. Russellville in 2000. Before that, there was Paintsville in three straight years from 1996-98.

 

2A ... Elizabethtown was when they won it all in 2000. I think Fleming County was 2A in football when they made the final four in 1998.

I don't think they would appreciate it. The Board of Control hasn't been kind the last couple of years.

If we ever have KHSAA-sanctioned class basketball, two classes is all we need.

 

And since we already have the All A Classic in place, I see no need to make a change. My only wish is that the All A Classic would up its enrollment limit just a bit to include the Caldwell Countys, Corbins and Shelby Valleys of the state.

There were two in 2000, with Elizabethtown and Russellville. I forgot about Russellville doing it two years in a row.

I agree with points #1 and #3.

 

I simply think the All A Classic puts a dent in the argument for KHSAA-sanctioned classification, but I certainly understand where the proponents of classification are coming from.

If the rules are bad, why shouldn't they be changed? Life isn't fair, but the KHSAA could easily change the state tourney so it could be a lot closer to fair than it is now.

 

And no, not everyone is trying to win one state championship trophy. The best many schools can hope to do is get a favorable draw in the district, make the region and then get beat down by a much larger school.

 

If that's such a great tradition, why don't more states besides, what is it now, TWO?, have such a tournament.

Illinois had a great two-class setup that has worked fabulously for 30-something years. They scrapped it to go with four classes next year, and I would estimate that a slight majority of fans are against it.
