February 21, 200719 yr I'm glad I made the switch to "TB" a few days ago. I've always been a Tubby fan, but ignoring problems and expecting them to go away isn't the way to build a program in college basketball. There are too many "what ifs"...... There are several respected posters (not me of course) switching slowly to the "dark side"......... They won't be respected posters for long if they continue on this path...:sssh:
February 21, 200719 yr Only big dispute in the article I would say is that I honestly feel UK came out to play against Florida, just could not make a shot, thus the early defecit. I can deal with that. But efforts such as how they started out against 'Bama and LSU I cannot tolerate.
February 21, 200719 yr :thumb: It appears, thus far for '08 - , UK is starting to do the necessary "leg work" prior to kids' senior years. I have no idea how the kid that verbaled yesterday will turn out, but it is a lot more refreshing knowing someone is penciled in to come in far in advance. When you wait you are forced to go with others such as Alleyne, Perry, etc. And when you get ***** in April more often than not there is a reason they are still on the board for you to get in on late...
February 21, 200719 yr It makes me wonder how much they were really evaluated over recruiting the rankings and hype. This goes back to my theory of landing kids early even if they aren't the biggest names in the recruiting industry. How much is the staff really doing in terms of leg work? Again to use UC as an example (only because I've gotten closer to the situation and see how Mick does things) how often are coaches missing from practice because they are in Georgia or Texas or Florida or New York/Jersey or some other talent rich area? Are they really out there doing the dirty work to see if the targets are as good (or bad) as advertised? From the outside looking in, the answer is no. UK is getting outworked on the recruiting trail as far as I can tell... The most disappointing thing to me this offseason was not an overhaul on the coaching staff in related to assistants and recruiting. Everyone goes ape of Pitino as this mastermind. He was a mastermind at having a phenomenal coaching staff. Imagine having a Billy Do talking to a recruit. Tubby working with defense. Herb Sendek on the bench. Ralph Willard there. Not sure this staff matches up.
February 21, 200719 yr As a former D-I SEC football player in the topic of motivation: If you, as a player at this level, need the coach to motivate you to play hard, you have no buisness being at this level, no matter your talent. All things that deal with lack of effort, IMO lie directly on the players shoulders. If players don't respond to the coach, it is still IMO the responsibility of the players to self motivate.
February 21, 200719 yr And when you get ***** in April more often than not there is a reason they are still on the board for you to get in on late... Bingo.

February 21, 200719 yr Bingo. I will also say the recruiting ahead issue wasn't a factor with this year's freshman class. They identified targets early and got them in the fold. I don't see a problem with holding one or two spots if you have four or five open and a legit chance at a big name like Patterson or Lucas. It's when you mortgage the whole class on them and are left alone at the alter that you get Bobby Perry, She Man and so on...
February 21, 200719 yr Im not sure who to put the blame on with this team. Tubby and his staff do not recruit well enough to build solid teams for the future. The players play with very little emotion if any at all(thats what bothers me the most, I could handle the losses if a few people on the team would act like they care.)I do know there is no excuse for a prgram such as Kentucky's to be in the slow downfall that they are in. I'm not saying any of this is Tubby's fault in any way, but sometimes to get to the bottom of something you have to start at the top.

Agreed 100%, regarding players but when they don't, playing time must decrease to help get their "focus" and attention, back to task at hand. Coaches must manage those who can help, through self-motivation and consistency. In Football, as you well know the "depth chart", is an excellent motivational tool. You underachieve and certainly, will slide down the chart. I would rather have passionate athletes playing, than lose with minimal effort.
February 21, 200719 yr Recruiting starting in 08 and on will be much more organized and better because of Sean Finney. He was out on the trail last summer with Tubby before he was even officially named to the staff.
February 21, 200719 yr Refresh my memory. Were all four of the "Oh-Fer" class spring recruits??? According to rivals the commitment dates were: Bradley - 11/09/03 Crawford - 01/26/04 Morris - 05/06/04 Rondo - 01/26/04

February 21, 200719 yr Bird's last point is legitimate, although not for the reason he thinks it is. Juniors would suffice to lead the underclassmen, but I don't think they're leaders. Bradley is demonstrative, but it's about HIS play. Morris and Crawford don't strike me as leaders. Look at U of L. The unquestioned leader is David Padgett. He's not a senior, but the younger players clearly respect him. T-Will is the BMOC, but even he knows on the court that it's Padgett's huddle.
