This one is simple. Those players at the smallest schools DO work their butts off and do SOMETIMES pull off the giant upsets. But the FACTS of the matter are that smaller schools simply don't have the bodies available to them to compete with a Highlands, or other large school. Not every district has that problem but there are some that do. The whole public /private debate to me was such a joke when by far the most glaring inequity in high school sports is the single class competition in basketball. baseball and other sports. I'll gladly compete with a NewCath and work like crazy to play up to their standard of competition, but expect a small school to routinely compete with the like of Male, PRP, Henry Clay, etc. is simply ridiculous and self serving. At this time the only recourse available to small schools is to force the issue by forcing blind draws.

You are exactly correct. Why is it that the big schools say "the small schools need to suck it up and compete," while they complain that a blind draw is somehow "unfair" to them? What, they shouldn't be forced to "suck it up and compete?" The ENTIRE rest of the state tournament is based on a blind draw or modified blind draw (Regionals). Why such an uproar over the Districts?

Strangely it seems, that even with the blind draw, it's been NCC/Highlands in the finals for about the last 8 straight years. That's beating some serious odds for the Breds/Birds. Does anybody know the last time Bellevue and Dayton have been alone on the same side of the bracket? I know that it has happened, but I sure can't remember the last time it did.

I'm kind of on the fence about the whole thing. I believe that a high percentage of districts now do seed their tournaments so it would seem only fair that this was done uniformly throughout the state. I like the idea of making the regular season mean something, however I do get a rush out of seeing a small school get a chance that they ordinarily wouldn't have.

I heard that they drew wrong and now they are having a re-draw today? How can you draw wrong? You draw a number and then you go to that spot on the bracket. Doesn't seem like rocket science.

I heard that Bellevue's AD was a big factor in the re-draw. He apparently is the one who brought up the error to the KHSAA. Anyone have any info on this?

So it sounds like the AD who was responsible for the draw (Dayton maybe) built the brackets incorrectly. I guess at that point you have two choices: 1. slot the teams as drawn in the slots on the corrected brackets or 2. re-draw. While it doesn't really matter to me, I probably would have voted for option 1. The order that the teams were drawn is not in dispute. Therefore, it should have been an easy fix.

So Highlands should be jumping up and down but if there is a year the the Birds can get shocked by an undermanned opponent, this may be the year. Bellevue will still have to beat a good team to make it. It all works out in the end.

The only thing different from this draw and every 36th district draw in the past was the brackets were wrong. They could have played the tournament the way it was BUT one school complained about the brackets and the number of pills used. You are supposed to use 8 pills while they used only 5, one for each team. This is the same number of pills every other school in the district used when hosting the district tournament. This compalint was coming from ONE school who wanted to get a better draw. They didn't.

How would you seed the 36th? Can't go by head-head. They don't play each other in the regular season.

Because with the blind draw in some districts within the region, while other districts within the region seed, can result in a "bye" for some team in the region.

 

IMO the object of the Regional competition should be to have the BEST team represent your Region in the Sweet 16 not the team that had a first round "bye".

 

Either all districts in the region should seed or none should seed.

Thats what I thought. How do you not play teams in your district?

I dont like the seed either bulldog.. Seeding doesnt benefit the small schools... Really doesnt.. They like the blind draw and it looks like it is working out for most

 

It does benefit the small schools if they win during the regular season. Example: Sayre beat Henry Clay this year so they EARNED the 3rd seed in the district tournament - they get to play Bryan Station instead of Scott County

 

Maybe there should be a policy where big schools can only play left handed - maybe the small schools should be able to play with a 6th player.... if we're trying to make it all even - every opportunity for the underdog - no child/small school left behind...

I assume that NCC must play Newport since the Breds coaching staff was in the house taking in the BB-Newport game Tuesday night.

 

I also heard that Willie has a one and in with either Bellevue or Dayton.

NCC scouts were in the house tonite at the HHS-Shleby Co. game. The Breds are working hard to win the district...ithey won't lose it due to lack of effort!!
