ABC/ESPN/SEC off YouTube TV

Featured Replies

Went off overnight due to a carriage dispute. No college football this weekend as 90% of college football seems to be on those networks. No Sunday night or Monday night football and several NBA games won't be available to YouTube TV subscribers.

ESPN has been running a banner on screen for a week saying this was coming. In the end it's two behemoth corporations fighting for their slice of our money.

Google (a company with a three trillion dollar market cap) has said they will give a $20 credit if the outage is prolonged.

  • Correct. Basically, for live ESPN, absent a package deal, you are looking at $30/month.  As I understand, Disney is losing $5M/day.

Seems like this happens every few years, hopefully it is resolved quickly.

Google the $3,000,000,000,000 corporation has kindly said if the dispute with Disney isn't settled soon they will give all of little people a $20 credit. Well bless their hearts looking out for all of us.

To be serious a minute Disney is wanting more money from YouTube TV for all of the content that they provide like A&E, ACC Network, ABC, Disney Channel, Disney Junior, Disney XD, ESPN. FX, Freeform, History, Lifetime, Nat Geo Wild, National Geographic, SEC Network and Vice TV. Google doesn't want to pay more. The contract expired last night and here we are.

I expect this to be resolved in a few days and in the end we will pay more to someone if we want to watch these channels wether it be on YouTube TV, Apps or from other providers.

My wife is pulling her hair out not having ABC for all her shows.

Is this really going to end soon or do I need to opt going to another streaming service….

If so, which one do I go with?!?!?

I hate this!!!

Disney has a Hulu+ special offer that last until the 5th, trying to steal away YTTV subscribers I'm guessing. I think this dispute ends when that special offer does.

Tough it out for 5 days or go ahead and switch to Hulu, Fubo, Direct TV, local cable or the magic box.

I think the real game is Disney is seeking this fight specifically to try to force customers to either Hulu Live or Fubo, both of which they own. If they force much higher carriage rates onto YouTube TV, they know Google isn't going to eat that, they’ll pass it on to consumers. Which in turns provides an incentive for customers to switch. Or, Google decides not to negotiate and does without ESPN and the other Disney networks, guess what - people will want to switch. Almost like allowing these types of conflicts of interest creates a problem….

In the end, per usual, the only people who will lose are us, the consumer.

Classic ploy that continually happens because it works.   ESPN and Discovery were and are the worst abusers of the process.   Pull the channels and hope enough people complain until company B pays the increased carry rights.   Of course then we as the viewers show our rage at company B when they raise the rates to cover the increase.

Ultimately, what they want is for you to pay them directly for ESPN+ and cut out the middle man, but as long as the middle man is there, they will try and squeeze them for as much as they can.

Corporate America, ladies and gentlemen.

I got Hulu today and I would pay more if I have to for YouTube TV

I switched from DirectTv a few years ago when NFL Sunday Ticket became property of YouTube. At the time, YouTube Tv was also quite a bit cheaper, and I was saving almost $100 per month, so I was thrilled. Now a few years later, Youtube TV has almost doubled in price, and I'm still dealing with these carriage disputes. I don't watch a ton of live TV outside of live sports, and I'm only a casual college football fan, and I have the lowest level of Hulu, so I'm not missing much. I work Monday nights, so I'm not even missing out on Monday night football. I'm sure this will get resolved, but I'm also sure we'll see another rate increase in the very near future. TV is rapidly becoming a costly luxury, and as I watch less and less tv as I get older, I'm not sure what my future plans will be. As it stands, I'm currently paying a lot for something I'm not getting a lot of use out of.

I’m holding out. The only that’ll force my hand is not being able to watch UK/UL on November 11th. Telling myself it’ll be resolved before then.

I have been thinking about switching from altafiber to YouTube TV and I already calculated that if I did, I would also have buy ESPN+ too so from a cost standpoint there would not be any savings.

I upgraded my main TV which is capable of 8K (not that there is much programming) but the TV reveals the flaws (stream quality) in the various ways I watch TV and the altafiber streams are subpar at best thus why I am thinking about a change.

Because I pay for ESPN though my provider I can also stream it direct from ESPN and that is worlds better than anything though altafiber.

I have Prime because I love Amazon and their picture quality is amazing and Netflix is great too but keeps bugging me about paying more each month for higher quality streams, ugh..

I feel like this becomes more difficult and expensive by the day.

To bring me/us up to speed, what are you holding out with and what changes may you make if the 11th doesn't go well?
