Lawrence County 95 Martin County 84 (15th Region Championship)

Featured Replies

Lawrence Co loses in the first round of district, then goes on a run to knock off all the top teams of the region. What a run! Shoutout the super regional!

Congratulations to Lawrence County but I don't love it. Seems hardly fair that a team can be eliminated in the district tournament and still get to play in the region while 15 other regions didn't have the chance. I understand it is something of a pilot program - although those usually just last one year and this is year two (not to mention the KHSAA did the same in the 15th about a decade ago) - but I'd argue the same opportunity needs to be available to all schools or otherwise shut it down in the 15th Region.

I'm all for the super region...needs to happen across the state.  IMO, it just makes too much sense.  So many region tournaments you have 3 teams in a single district, that could win the whole thing (their region), only for one to not even make it.

Conversely? You'll have teams make that same region tourney that don't have a snowballs chance in winning it due to coming out of some rag tag district, essentially "stealing" a spot based off nothing more than their district sucks worse than another one(s) in the region.

I love everything about the 15th and this super region.

Agree with all this.  Doesn't make sense for only one region to have this opportunity.  I could see this result sparking banter for everyone to get this opportunity.  There are a lot of quality districts throughout the state that would be dying for this chance to "play back in".

Let me add, I don't dislike the idea of a super-region. I just think it should be available to either all or none.

Oh, absolutely!  Needs to happen. Makes way too much sense to do it this way.

The state's #2 and #4 scoring teams didn't disappoint. Lawrence County averaged 88 ppg across four Super Regional games. Their style will at least give them a puncher's chance against the 10th Region champ at Rupp.

I don’t totally understand the format but what I don’t like about it is that it basically eliminates the need for district tournaments. Why even play a district tournament if everyone is going to be playing in the region regardless? Just have one big regional tournament and seed it with some kind of ratings formula, which I don’t like either, and come up with a champion.
I think I like the way we have been doing it for decades. If it ain’t broken there’s no need for a fix.

This format is ridiculous and should be ruled out for the 15th region, nobody else is doing it, just doesn’t make any sense, giving second chances in tourney play just isn’t realistic.

I mean you technically get a second chance when you lose in a district championship.

Question for anyone, is it up to each region how they choose to do it? Could other regions do the super region if they wanted?

My guess is that District Athletic Directors could come together and make the decision on it.
