February 1, 200719 yr You could argue Pitino has done as good a job at getting top rated guys to UL as he did at UK. Just not as good at keeping them on the floor...
February 1, 200719 yr Yep, seems like that time of year. This thread pops up about every year like clockwork...
February 2, 200719 yr Is there a program around that is as good as UK was when Rick was there? You could probably make an argument for a couple. You guys act like we can just go back to the way it was by replacing Tubby. We can't just switch the two. How is the program Rick is at now? Is it as good as when he was at UK? Michigan State is solid, Florida has played in 2 title games in the recent years. UNC will be in a few years, IMO.

February 2, 200719 yr Here's the updated stats comparing Rick and Tubby's coaching carreers at UK.....just for discussion purposes only. Percentage of games ranked in top 5: Tubby 16% Pitino 59% (53% if you include probation year). Number of games in top 5: Tubby in 326 games ranked 54 games in top 5 Pitino in 269 games ranked 142 games in top 5 Number of Home losses: Tubby 18 (about to add a whole lot more) Pitino 5 (7 if you include probation year). 10+ loss seasons: Tubby 4 (in 7 years - soon to be 5 in 8 ). Pitino 0 (1 if you include the probation year). Average number of losses per year: Tubby 7.9 (about to push that up over 8 ) Pitino 4.8 (throwing out the 1st year) Games played as #1 ranking: Pitino 10 Tubby 4 Games played as #2 ranking: Pitino 44 Tubby 14 Games played as #3 ranking: Pitino 33 Tubby 10 Games played as #4 ranking: Pitino 18 Tubby 15 Games played as #5 ranking: Pitino 37 Tubby 11 Total games with top 5 ranking: Pitino 142 Tubby 54 Team Turmoils: Tubby 2 Pitino 0 Transfers out of the Program: Tubby 14 (with many more trying to) Pitino 7 NBA 1st round draft picks: Tubby 2 Pitino 10 Rick Pitino’s 1st year 14-14 probation team averaged more than 10 ppg than ANY Tubby Smith team except 2. It averaged 8 more than those two. Rick Pitino - Points per Game 1989-90 88.82 1990-91 85.89 1991-92 85.72 1992-93 87.50 1993-94 86.88 1994-95 87.39 1995-96 91.44 1996-97 83.13 Tubby Smith takes over 1997-98 80.08 1998-99 75.41 1999-00 69.09 2000-01 79.79 2001-02 76.88 2002-03 77.28 2003-04 73.91 2004-05 73.62 2005-06 70.77 2006-07 72.32 Pitino 5 Final Fours (3 at Kentucky) Tubby 1 Final Four (never been to a FF with his own players in his career) Pitino 2 Championship games at Kentucky Tubby 1 (none with players he recruited) Pitino 22-5 (.783) in the NCAA tournament at Kentucky Tubby 23-8 (.663) Pitino beat 11 teams seeded 5th or higher in 6 NCAA Tournaments. Tubby has beaten 4 teams seeded 5th or higher in 9 NCAA Tournaments, and just one since his first season at Kentucky. Funny how Pitino gets a pass for his 1st year and Tubby gets no credit for anything he did in his 1st year...It's pretty easy to spin it to make it look this way when you pick and choose what suits you...What a joke...
February 2, 200719 yr Michigan State is solid, Florida has played in 2 title games in the recent years. UNC will be in a few years, IMO. Look at this 5 year stretch for UK under Pitino....93-final four, 94-2nd round, 95 elite 8, 96 Champions, 97 runner-up and a few of you (not me) like to say 98 was Ricks Championship. So if you count that it would be an amazing 6 year run. And alot of you all talk about how it is not like it use to be when Pitino was here. Well as OriginalRookie said NO TEAM or COACH IN THE COUNTRY has been close to the run we had during that time with Pitino. Alot of you all try to measure Tubby up against that, and no Coach or any team since that run could measure up against that. Not Duke, not UNC, not UF, not KU. The only school who can say they have came close is UCONN, but it still wasn't as good as that run. Nobody has ever said that Tubbys run at UK has been better than Pitino, so I really dont know why Eagle said that. You all say we dont realize that UK is not like those year with Pitino and we know that, but no other school has been like those years with Pitino either. Most of us do realize Tubby needs to work on something like recruiting for one. So you all saying stuff like we dont see that the program is going down is not true, and we do realize there are some stuff that needs to change like the recruiting...

Did you not follow Kentucky basketball before Pitino? I think you can throw his first year out. His first year was actually overacheiving...
February 2, 200719 yr Author You mean the time of year where UK has played itself in to the middle of the pack??? Absolutely......:thumb: ......and it's clearly obvious that Tubby supporters hate to be presented with facts.
February 2, 200719 yr Some things that stick out to me: 1) 1st round draft picks. Rick was bringing in much better talent then Tubby is. 2) Home losses. The Cats really did "protect this house" under Rick. 3) Beating top notch teams in the NCAA tourney. The stat about only beating a #5 or better once since 98 is shocking. This all boils down to recruiting IMO. Both are great coaches but Rick brought in better players than Tubby, thus allowing him to compete with the big dogs in the big games. This is what KILLS me. I can't stand when the Cats lose in Rupp. Vandy game was horrible.

February 2, 200719 yr Present all the facts you want. They are useless IMO. Why are these facts so useless? They are very interesting, and show a major difference.
