Reed Sheppard Declares for the NBA Draft

I have to admit, this kinda shocked me. I knew Jeff had serious Hops, but had no idea Reed could get up like that!

  • Not singling you out, but this is a pretty selfish take that is floating around parts of BBN.  I'm sure Reed's ultimate goal was to play professional basketball, not play at UK. Was UK on his roa

If you're a projected lottery pick, you go. Plain and simple. Good luck to Reed.

  • Anyone who didn’t see this coming (my better half, for example) is wearing blue blinders.    And if this news turns out to be a hoax, I’ll eat my crow served with a slab of @Randy Parker meatlo

Not surprised. I said several times during this season that Sheppard is a much better athlete than people realize. He made some plays during the season that really opened my eyes on his physical talent.

Anything above 36 inches is very good, but when guys can jump anywhere in the 40 inch plus category, it's very elite. I'm still surprised Reed jumped that high even with us all saying he was an underrated athlete.

Told you guys when Shep was a Senior in high school that he could play in the NBA and got laughed at, not so funny right now huh?

I believe Shep laughed when you posted that, didn't he?

On a serious note, Sheppard himself is surprised at the last 9 months. He didn't even expect to play nearly as much this year as he did. He thought he would be at UK for all 4 years. It truly is an amazing story.

This mornings NBA draft projections on ESPN still project Reed going to the Houston Rockets at #3 and Dillingham going to San Antonia at #4.  I still marvel how exciting it was when these two came off the bench before the first TV timeout.  Instant energy erupted in the stands and on the floor.

Isn’t it amazing how Reed, a Ky high school star, questionable by much of BBN as to whether he was big enough, fast enough, and athletic (?) enough to play at the SEC level could have risen so high, so fast.  Truly a great story.

isn’t it amazing how many of our BBN experts are saying exactly the same things about Travis Perry and Trent Noah?  I truly believe both are going to make major contributions to a pretty fun Ky team to watch and hopefully we get to support their successes for more than one year.

Congrats to Reed, go ahead and make all the non believers look silly again!!

About $27 Million guaranteed over the next 3 years. I think he made the right decision.

I am glad he got the above contract and with his dad he will invest it wisely. I knew he is a great passer and great shooter but as I had said numerous times last season, he would struggle in the NBA he would not be able to get his shot off as easily as he did in college and would really struggle on the defensive end.

From Nation of Blue yesterday:

The Houston Rockets have assigned guard Reed Shepppard to Rio Grande Valley of the NBA G League. Sheppard has played very sparingly for the Rockets, averaging just 3.3 points and 1.2 assists per game this season.

Still not a doubt in my mind that he will be a very solid NBA player.

Shep went for 50 in G game last night, can’t hold this guy down!!

He could grow into a role player, sure. He'll have to consistently shoot well and he'll have to prove he can defend to get consistent minutes.

Exactly you just proved my point. Hey like I said he got a $27 million contract and is now playing with guys in the same boat as him that are not athletic enough to get to the rim and to be able to stay in front of their man. He will be one of if not the best in the G league. At least he is getting big bucks and does not have the pressure of guys that don't have that big contract in their back pocket and are trying to play for their livelihood. I am happy for him! I would love to see him have a great NBA career, but he cannot become more athletic, a great college player and the best he will be in the NBA is average at best.
