With all due respect, I do not see this happening for Reed, he simply can't guard his shadow. Good kid, but at the end of the day, he's going to have to greatly improve his defensive skills. My thoughts is after is rookie contract, he will spend his days overseas playing professionally.

The same was said about JJ Redick and that was after playing 4 years in college. JJ was 7 years older than what Reed currently is before JJ really started to find a clear role in the NBA.

  • Not singling you out, but this is a pretty selfish take that is floating around parts of BBN.  I'm sure Reed's ultimate goal was to play professional basketball, not play at UK. Was UK on his roa

If you're a projected lottery pick, you go. Plain and simple. Good luck to Reed.

as most draftees end up there at some point. It's a little out of the norm for a #3 overall pick, but again, we can't compare last year's draft to any other. In a typical year, Sheppard would have been at the tail end of the lottery.

I went online and found a chart that actually listed the number of lottery picks the (first 14) since the lottery started that were ever sent down to the G-League and every year that number had always been below 5 until the 2023 draft as the season is not over yet it does not list the numbers for the 2024 draft yet. Two of the early years they were not any sent down and 5 more years there was only one player that was a lottery pick sent down.

Correct, the lottery selections are more uncommon, but most draftees (60 total) spend time in the developmental league.

From February 2024:

First-round picks: At least half of the first-round picks in the last three NBA drafts have played in the G League as rookies.

NBA rosters: 54% of players on current NBA rosters have G League experience.

Opening-night rosters: 50% of players on opening-night NBA rosters for the 2023-24 season had G League experience.

NBA postseason rosters: 57% of players on 2022-23 NBA postseason rosters had G League experience.

I think Sheppard is a little different too. As mentioned most drafts he wouldn’t have been a top 5 pick. Just last years draft was so weak. So he was the third overall pick and ended up on a team that is actually really good. As Houston has the second best record in the West. Most top 5 picks play on a team that is still horribly that year, so they still play that player. Houston is currently a top team and better off letting him get regular minutes in the G league for now.

He’s to athletic not to be able to defend, and when he realizes this is the reason he isn’t getting minutes, you will see a different defensive player, he’s entirely to good in every aspect of basketball for the Euro league.

Sheppard produced 19 points, seven assists, five rebounds and two steals in a 130-118 win against the OKC Blue at Bert Ogden Arena. He shot 5-of-16 from the field, including 4-of-11 from 3-point range, in 37 minutes as the Vipers improved to 2-4 in the regular season.

That didn’t take long, Shep back with Rockets!! He’s way to good for the G league and needs more minutes with Houston!!

I've watched Reed multiple times this year and he is getting about all the minutes he needs at this point. The G-League assignment was as much about giving him some game action as anything else. Players on every team go in and out of the G-League daily. His former UK teammate, Rob Dillingham, just got assigned to the Iowa Wolves today. He's coming back from an injury and the G-League will be used for tune-up action.

There’s not many that get sent to the G league that scores 98 points in 3 games, I think he gets minutes tonight in Houston vs Grizzlies that he didn’t get previously.

Look, I want Reed to be a force in the NBA, but players put up stupid numbers in the G-League. A lot of that is by design to give those going between the leagues a game speed workout.

I am a T-Wolves guy. Rookie 27th pick Terrence Shannon Jr. has played in a handful of games and is putting up nearly 38 a night in the G-League. He dropped 47 just a few days ago. Hell, Bronny James scored 30 a few weeks ago in the G-League game if that tells you anything about what's going on down there ?.

Let’s see what happens with Reed and I understand what you are saying.

Personal bias obvious here, I really want Reed to excel at the NBA level.  Would be great for every Ky kid dribbling a basketball and shooting at a hoop in their driveway.

Saw that and maybe he will be called upon for duty quickly as I have all the confidence in the world in him.

Not possible with all Ky kids but I truly believe this one can do the job.
