Way Early Preseason Rankings 2A

Disregard above. Here's my actual 2a rankings.

1 Beechwood

2 Owensboro Catholic

3 Mayfield

4 Lexington Christian Academy

5 Somerset

6 Murray

7 Green County

8 Monroe County

9 Crittenden County

10 Breathitt County

Any other teams out there worth consideration? Who's too high, too low? Thoughts?

LCA’s DC from last year, Paul Rains, is now at Western Hills.

LCA could be too high, or too low.  Their roster makeup is a little more fluid than most schools.  But I would have to think they will be somewhere in the 3-5 range.

I believe there will be some roster changes that have yet to take place. I will withhold my opinion until a little later. But I will say that I think Beechwood is the favorite for that number one spot.

I think your Top 6 are definitely the right teams and as someone mentioned their could be a lot more roster moves. Mayfield benefited from Biggers transferring in last year and who knows who will show up at LCA. O Cath is losing a little more than Beechwood but should be pretty stout so those two make sense. I’d probably have Murray ahead of Somerset but Somerset has a much easier path to advance further in playoffs.

I will agree with the top 6.  Order may be different but not much. Beechwood will be the favorite. OCath will have the best player in Atwell, but it will be tough replacing 9 offensive starters. LCA will reload. Mayfield will reload. Somerset and Murray have a strong young core and are on the outside looking in.

Why not Mayfield? You always have Beechwood number #1 till they are beaten when they have won their titles.

OCath has the best player coming back and a serious Mr. KY candidate.  I just think they have to replace too much.  Atwell only has his RT returning on the offensive side.  That, and the fact that they haven't won the 'ship yet, is my reason for them not to be on top.

Beechwood will have the 2nd best QB (very close 2nd IMO) in class 2A back. The difference is that the Tigers will have most of their team back in '24. That gives me the nod for them to start @ 1.  Not to mention that Beechwood has the easiest path to the semis being in the east.

Mayfield completed, arguably, the best playoff run in recent memory.  Taking down the best the class had to offer. Congrats, one more time, to the Cardinals. Well deserved!!  On to '24...  It's going to be hard to replace 15+ starters (sorry, don't have the exact number), but if anybody can do it, it's Big Red.  Mayfield is great at allowing their young players to get important reps throughout the season.  They develop players year in/out. Their rebuild years usually end in the 3rd of 4rd rounds which is astonishing if you ask me.

So here is my take (until LCA reveals all their transfers).

1. Beechwood

2. Mayfield

3. Owensboro Catholic

4. LCA

5. Murray

6. Somerset

It could be Mayfield as we get closer and I learn more about them. If they had half their starters back, I would say they should be #1. From what I know of Mayfield though, it feels like they lost so much it is tough to make them #1. At least Owensboro Catholic has their QB back and a few others. Mayfield has 1 WR back? Anything else?

Brady Atwell is the equivalent of five returning starters.

I like Clay Hayden more.

I am not taking a position on who is better but same with Clay Hayden.

Mayfield returns 3 of their top 5 WR that were all sophomores this season. They return 3 of their 5 starting OL. They return their starting TE which was a sophomore. They have 3 good RBs returning, none of which saw significant time in the backfield this year in big games because Starks and Dumas were both seniors ahead of them.

Mayfield returns 2 starting DL, neither of which played offense last year. They return all 3 starting LBs and 3 of their top 5 DBs, all 3 sophomores and play both ways at WR.

While the players they lose are huge losses and were KEY pieces to winning a championship, they still return more than some on here think. Losing Biggers and Morris at DB and WR is huge and losing Cartwright at QB and Starks at RB are huge.

Now for the huge question mark, the starting QB next year is currently a freshman and has never seen any varsity snaps except in running clock situations. Having a sophomore with no experience starting at QB is such a wildcard that I can’t allow myself to have Mayfield ranked #1. I think Beechwood is the clear cut #1 going into next season and then #’s 2-4 will be up in the air until about halfway through next season in my opinion.
