College Football Playoff: Top 25 (11/28/23)

If Florida St struggles at all with U of L and doesn't have thier QB...I think they are out regardless of being undefeated.  Washington vs Oregon is a play in game.

UGA is in...If UGA beats Bama, does FSU get jumped by tOSU or Texas (Assuming Texas Wins)?

Here's the burning question, do we put in the 4 best teams or the 4 most deserving teams?

If we want the 4 best teams to me it's:

Georgia (win or lose against Bama)

Michigan (Yes the cheater deserves to be in)

Oregon/Washington winner

The 4th spot is where I struggle, but I've decided on this:

If Bama beats Georgia they get the 4th spot. If Bama loses to Georgia and Texas beats Ok State, they get the 4th spot. If Bama, Texas loses Oregon loses to Washington again, then I put Ohio State in. Florida State without their QB is not even in the consideration for a top 4 spot. Now with him different story.

4 most deserving teams:

Georgia, Michigan, Oregon, FSU.

If Georgia beats Alabama, and I think they will, Florida State will get in if they beat UL.

Alabama beating Georgia is going to bring about the most interesting scenario.  I have already said I would put the two SEC teams in if that happened. Along with Michigan (assuming they win) and the Washington/Oregon winner.  That's what I would do.  I don't know if that's what would end up actually happening.

I find it more likely that Georgia gets in as a runner-up despite losing to Alabama than it is that both Georgia and Alabama will get in at the same time.  At least not without Texas and FSU both losing.  If they both go down.... then sure, I can see two SEC teams in.

It'll be harder to believe given I'm an FSU fan, but to me, the four most deserving.  "Best", when ignoring results, is so subjective that it completely eliminates the need for the regular season.  "Best" would seem to believe that Bama shouldn't have needed a basic miracle to beat Auburn - requiring a muffed punt followed by a 31 yard touchdown pass on 4th and Goal.  If we believe Bama is in the best four with a win over Georgia, would you have felt the same if Auburn had completed what was an incredibly likely win scenario last week? If the answer is yes, then it just leans further into that concept that "Best" is ignoring results on the field that don't support what you feel.  If it's no, then I question why would we be so fickle about the end result.

That to me is why "Deserving" is the answer here.  Based on the results over the course of the year.  Now, if someone wants to take into account a severe injury like the one Jordan Travis suffered as a mitigating circumstance, that I get.  But outside of that, we're in the argument that I was making in a previous thread about Texas and Alabama.  Texas beat them on the field, in Tuscaloosa.  Texas deserves it over them, whether we think Bama is better now, or not (and I don't, personally).  If we're going with best, I don't understand why Ohio State would even be on the outside looking in like they almost universally are.  Everyone thought they were one of the two best just one week ago.  A loss to Michigan - also among the best - shouldn't change that perception.

I just don't love how loose people are playing with the eye test and results on the field.  Because of their mixing of criteria, to me, it makes their position indefensible because of contradictions.

It all depends on if the committee truly wants the 4 best teams or the 4 most deserving teams.

I see no reason to believe that Ohio State gets in if Florida State wins.  I also don't believe this committee has the stones to hold an unbeaten Florida State team out regardless of what happens behind them.  If FSU moved up last week after beating an unranked Florida, even if many found it unimpressive, I see no reason to believe that beating a top 15 Louisville would cause them to have the reverse effect.  Especially since Texas would be beating a lower ranked Oklahoma State.

Well first, I'm going to ask you to take off your Scarlet FSU glasses, so we can have a good debate. First, that was a rivalry game, just like Georgia was with Tech, and let's be honest Georgia did not look great against Tech. Remember Georgia struggled with Auburn as well during the regular season. Georgia has won something like 30 straight games, IF (and that's a big if) Bama beats them, let's say on a last second FG, then the 4 teams I'm putting in are Michigan at 1 Oregon at 2, Georgia at 3 and assuming Texas wins at 4. Now that scenario will depend on FSU struggling with Louisville or just right out losing. If Bama beats Georgia going away (which I do not think will happen, but stranger things has happened) Bama would get the 4th spot and yes, they would jump OSU and Texas. Simply because they beat a team that has not lost in 2+ years.

I understand you are an FSU fan, are they deserving if they beat Louisville, yes, but I think you will have to confess they are not the same team without their QB, thus in my opinion not one of the 4 best.

I go back to Bama lost in September, I honestly believe if those two team played now, Bama wins by 2 TD's. As for OSU, it took a last second TD to beat an average ND team, they did beat a decent PSU team, but lost to Michigan in a game that never seemed to be any question on who the best team was.

I don't think my scarlet FSU glasses did anything here, ha. I basically said to me, most deserving should go because of the gymnastics that have to be done to make best work.  I get that you honestly believe Bama would win by two TDs over Texas, but again, we already saw the game and we didn't see it on a neutral field.  It's really not a defensible position because one of the primary criteria of who should be judged better is a direct head to head result.  If Texas had two losses, then they fall behind Alabama because of that, but here today, they've got identical records.  I've seen it argued (not here I don't think) that essentially Alabama lost to a better team and would have the better win, which is hilarious because that loss was to the team they're being compared to.  I'm peppering in FSU talk as well, but the focal point of my argument is Texas, not FSU.  No scarlet glasses removal needed for that one.

I'm really not trying to argue FSU is one of the four quote unquote best teams at this point, though I believe they deserve to go if they beat Louisville.  Can I say with certainty they're not? I don't believe that either, but certainly, they're a harder sell without Jordan.  That was what I said in my post, that if someone wants to make an argument on an injury to a critical player mitigating their resume at this point, then I understand, even if that's not the direction I'd want it to go.  I believe FSU to have a championship level defense, and just look no further in what they did vs. Daniels compared to what everyone else did.  Offense? Not anymore.  Maybe not even before.

But there isn't anything like that in Texas/Alabama in terms of injury.  Not yet, anyway. And to be honest, I also don't believe if Milroe were to get hurt in the closing minutes of a win over Georgia that I'm going to hear the same arguments that are being made now against FSU.  People were already looking to argue against FSU before Jordan got hurt, they just found their rally point after it happened.  It's totally my opinion but I don't see Bama getting held to that same standard, which again, just fuels my position that best is in the eyes of many just ignoring aspects that don't support their position, like ignoring resume aspects for what they believe and feel. If Texas wins, there is nothing Bama should be able to do to surpass them short of absolutely unloading on Georgia in like 2009 SEC title game proportions (where Bama beat top ranked Florida by 19).

I do find it interesting that you would wave away Alabama's near loss against Auburn as that's just a rivalry game while seemingly judging FSU harshly because Tate didn't impress against Florida in a *checks notes* rivalry game. I also fear we won't know much more about Tate this Saturday either, given that it is supposed to be raining a good amount during the ACC title game, and the ground game may be doing more work for both teams.

I am not for sure of that after the game today.

I am rooting for whatever scenario causes the most chaos and disagreement.

The Bama win obviously not only helps them but actually strengthens Texas in mop, so I’m going with Michigan(they’ll beat Iowa), Washington, Texas and Bama
