Enforcement of Fouls Behind the Line of Scrimmage Rule Change for 2023

Featured Replies

The NFHS made the rule change to maintain balance between offense and defense. The rules revision says that the spot for enforcement of fouls behind the line of scrimmage, such as a holding penalty, is enforced from the previous spot, rather than the spot of the foul. The exception is current penalties for illegal kicking, batting and participation fouls as well as offensive fouls occurring in the end zone that may result in a safety.

In the games that I have seen so far this season, it seems that officials are all over the place on this rule. I have seen it marked off from the point of the infraction numerous times this season? Anyone else seen this new rule not being enforced from the line of scrimmage?

I have for sure seen it marked from the spot of the foul and not the previous line of scrimmage.

I've seen it done both ways so far. However, I'll also add I've seen more discussion after the call regarding this than before. I think they're trying to get it right, but old habits die hard. I do believe it was a good rule change.

On offense it’s from the line of scrimmage now, not ghr spot of the foul. Changed this season. Everyone is thrown for a loop.

So far I have seen it enforced correctly. Holdings calls behind the line of scrimmage have been marked off from the original line of scrimmage. A holding that takes place down the field past the line of scrimmage has been marked off from where the foul occurs.

It’s basically the same as the NFL now in regards to how the rule is enforced.

It seems that there is a lot of confusion amongst the officials in the games I’ve seen.  I’ve seen them do it both ways, and one game they talked it out and got it correct.

It’s a state rule change so why so much differentiation on enforcement? Should be the same for all officials?

It’s a new enforcement. I’d assume if you’ve been enforcing a penalty one way for a long time your muscle memory is to just enforce it the old way, but it should be covered extensively before every game since it is brand new:

Every official working a high school football game should know and enforce the penalty properly or get reprimanded or suspended a number of games.

It didn’t impact the game, but Lloyd last week had a hold behind the line of scrimmage and it cost them like 20 yards, because of then new ruling. Suspensions are a bit much, especially since it’s hard to get new officials. I’d assume they got a “talking to” in this regard as every one would.

No excuses for not knowing the rules and penalty yardage walk offs and spot to do it.

It cost them 20 yards because of the new ruling?

It's a rule that's been in place for a long time. It'd be wise to show some grace to those who are giving up their time to officiate our games.

Why officiate when he can just criticize for free!
