2-0 Pioneers will host Covington Catholic. SK was rewarded the win over Woodford on a coin toss. 2-0 CovCath beat Highlands and huge games from Pitzer and Leen. CovCath has a very nice team. It will be interesting to see how they match up against the mighty Pioneers!

I agree SK beating Dixie by running the ball down their throat was impressive, but I believe CoVCath has one of the best Defensive Coordinator’s in the state, and last night I saw how disciplined they were in a highly emotional heated environment. Two UK recruits going at so I’m excited to see that. Good luck to both teams.

Cov Cath wins big. 42-14 sounds about right. 

Roy Lucas Jr. has a 1-1 record against Cov Cath, dating back to the late 90s and his first tenure as skipper for the Pioneers. Eddie Eviston is 1-0 against Simon Kenton as head coach of Cov Cath, with an additional 2-0 record against Simon Kenton during his time as head coach at New Cath.

Lucas and the Pioneers had a 30-27 win against Cov Cath back in 1998 to tally the second of two all-time wins over the Colonels, with the other SK victory taking place in 1979 in the first football game ever played between the two programs. The overall series record stands at 22 wins to 2 in the favor of the Colonels.

The series was put on mothballs following the 2004 season, and was only recently renewed in 2020 when shuffling to revise schedules due to COVID-19 changes brought these two back together on the gridiron. Covington Catholic traveled to Independence and beat Simon Kenton 38-3 in Jeff Marksberry's final season as head coach of the 'Neers. The game also earned Coach Eviston his 100th all-time win as a head coach, with 35 wins at New Cath and 65 more at Cov Cath. Two seasons-and-change later, Eviston is now sitting on 123 all-time wins, and an career coaching record of 123-30 (80.4% winning).

6A Simon Kenton will be coming into the game after an un-intentional week off, following the cancellation of their Friday night game against 5A Woodford County in the Vallozzi Bowl due to a storm system rolling through central Kentucky. The Pioneers are currently sitting with a 1-0 record after beating 5A Dixie Heights 29-19 at home in their season opener. Dixie's extremely fast-paced offense and several miscues by the Pioneers put Simon Kenton down 19-7 at the half in Week 1, but Simon Kenton fought back in the second half to pull ahead and win the game.

4A Cov Cath is headed into Week 3 with a 2-0 record after beating 6A Ryle 37-22 in their opener. The Colonels jumped out to an early 21-0 lead in the first half before Ryle scored late in the 2Q. After the half, Ryle gave up a safety on a botched punt snap, and then both teams added 2 touchdowns to get to the final score. This past Friday Cov Cath tallied their 10th win in their past 11 games against 5A Highlands, beating the Birds 35-21 in Fort Thomas. Despite the Birds' offense outgaining the Colonels' offense by about 25 yards, Cov Cath won the special teams and turnover battles, both, and brought home their second win of the season.

Really! I can easily think of 3 games this coming weekend that I would put at game of the week before this one. In no particular order:

Johnson Cent. vs. Belfry
