Mayer's absence had nothing to do with his dissatisfaction with his role or a trade demand, and instead the tight end is indeed dealing with a personal issue.

The exact details behind Mayer's personal issue remain unknown, but his family did reach out to the Raiders to notify them that it was "a situation that has occurred in his life before."

Mayer has since been placed on the non-football illness list and will miss at least four games as a result. He is eligible to be activated following the Raiders' Week 10 bye, but it remains to be seen if that will happen.

Hopefully everything is okay and the it was "a situation that has occurred in his life before." part of that article/Mayer's response is interesting to me because if it has happened before and it is happening right now, chances are it will happen again.  Whatever it is, all the best to Big Mike and those close to him.

Because Brock Bowers was an absolute stud at TE for them this year. 

I figured that was the answer. Did they draft Mayer thinking he was that kind of TE? To me he was the tradtional TE not the new age one we have.

At the time it seemed that he was drafted to be the traditional tight end, but when someone of Bowers talent is there you take it and adjust your scheme. Combine that with the fact that Brady was in the owners ear and you take the huge, uber athletic, game changing tight end.

Michael has 2 years left on his rookie deal.  With the injury to Erick All, I think the Bengals might kick the tires on a deal if this news is true.  I believe Drew Sample has 1 year left on his deal so this would benefit the Bengals for 2 years at least.  Mayer isn't going to bring the Raiders a 2nd round pick, but for a 4th or 5th rounder I would be interested.

All that and remember Michael had the personal issue where he missed some games last year.
