Basketball is still King of the Bluegrass, Football Format announced:

^ You mean you want it to be organized and a first class event??? Im sure the KHSAA feels that the 20 concession stand workers is plenty to handle the crowd and provide concessions to all...... It has been a joke for the past 30 years, this would seem as an excellent opportunity to change the issue you raise. Question: Was it a KHSAA objective to improve the Football Championship weekend or give more kids the opportunity to play in the Championship game.....?

I think If they put in two large heated tents at either end of the parking lot , with tables, vendors, and kids games ( you know like some of that compitition stuff they do at half time just move it to the parking lot for entertainment between games) and I think it would much improve the day. Heck maybe set up a BGP's zone.:D

We can put a tarp over The Big Red Tomato and its sidekick the Short Bus. Maybe the Hudy bus will make the trip and we'll have a tent city with buses.

A three day event would really make this thing bigger but looks like the KHSAA has their head in the sand on this one.

I hope we're the last game, like we're supposed to be.

Like you're supposed to be???

What gives the 6A schools the right to have the last game of the day?

I think they should just televise a draw show to see who gets what time. To me that's the fairest way to do it.

Why do you think 3 days makes it a bigger event?

If all 3 are in two more people are going to see the game as MOST people work and will/cannot take 2 days off of work or can afford 3 night at the rates some Louisville places charge because they know people will pay.

How do you get that basketball is entitled to 12 days of school?

With everything said basketball is taking a huge hit, especially schools like Belfry and Russell. With football ending a week later most schools of about 700 and less will not get their players until about 5 games into the season. So a kid that plays football misses from October 15th until December 9th or roughly 33% of the season but us basketball coaches shold just deal with it I guess.

If it was reversed would football coaches let kids come into the season after 4 games have been played and a month of summer practice? Most I know would not.

It was bad enough sitting out in the elements this past season for all of Friday's games. It will be brutal doing the same for 2 days if the weather is nasty again. Three games in one day makes it a little extreme IMO.

JD,

3 games in one day means football for 12 hours straight with not much time to do anything else. Not to mention that will be a cold 12 hours. 2 games each day leaves a lot of time to eat, meet, sleep, etc.

I get 12 days by adding 3 for the boys Sweet 16 with 3 for the girls Sweet 16 with 3 for the Boys All A with 3 for the girls All A.

The season going a week longer is a debate for another thread.

Personally I like the format I think attendance will go up and alot of people can just take the friday off from work to make the trip to Louisville, I am not srue that the finals have anything to do with basketball like a lot of people argue. I think it should be about accomodating schools and the consumers. No matter how many days kids get off for basketball, anytime we can keep them in school is a good thing.

Being in school is a good thing, but when the powers that be use school time as an excuse in one sport and throw it out the window for another, then the double standard is obvious.

Football, from beginning of practice to championship is aprx 5mths.

Basketball, from beginning of practice to championship is aprx 5mths.

Football has 10 to 15 games a season with 2 scrimmages.

Basketball has 25 to 35 games a season with practically a second season in the summer.

If anything it would make sense to shorten the basketball season by one week(25 to 35 games), then to shorten the football season by one week (10 to 15 games).

Kentucky has started the football season one week earlier than surrounding states for years, and is just now changing it to one week later, just has most other states.

Coaches, Trainers, and doctors have been lobbying the state for years to push the beginning of the season back, just one week, due to extreme heat and humidity.

I think you would be surprised to see how many people would attend the games in a three day format. I know of many people, and bet you do also, who take vacation time from work to attend the Sweet 16.

If they want to get the format right from here, they will go with 1,3,5 A schools on Friday and 2,4,6 A games on Saturday. That way your big school games are both in the evening. This is not to say that the smaller schools are any less important, because they aren't. It is just a simple business decision.

I agree there is a double standard against football in several aspects.

I am not nearly as concerned about how many games are played, on which day, as I am about making the championships a bigger production. I'd like to make the players and coaches feel more like they have accomplished something as opposed to playing the game and getting on the bus and heading home. I have been on the carpet numerous times as well as attened the championships as a fan and there seems to be no effort made to accomodate the coaching community nor any extra effort made to make the competing teams feel special. In fact this year the security was so rude to the coaches wives that wanted to be on the field after the game with their husbands that things almost got ugly. Yes, we should have asked for more sideline passes but that is not the pt.

Additionally, Cardinal stadium is nice but the locker room facilities are not large enough for halftime. We shared the hallway with the national guard and could hardly move around to talk to our players and make adjustments. I'm not so sure it would not be more fun and a better atmosphere at a smaller venue like EKU or Western than the pizza box. Anyway this is just a thought, I'd like to hear if others feel similarly or am I alone.

Moving the finals to another location is for another thread. The one point I will add is it looks possible the games could end up at WKU (at least every other year) in the future. I think this is another very bad decision but I will save that for another thread.
