2007 Corbin

Featured Replies

Corbin will be fine next year, no one said they would not be fine. He has yet another state championship caliber team on his hands. This has nothing to do with how the team will do next year.

This is about a coach who dropped his teams best rivalry game, without thinking of shame he brought to the Corbin team, and Corbin community.

I'm aware that he was a part of what made the Corbin football tradition, but sometimes I wonder if he fell asleep during the lessons. Corbin football "today" is not the same Corbin football that made it famous. We don't dominate the area like we used to. I'd like to see us restake our claim as Southeast Kentucky's premier football program, but dropping Bell County was not a step in that direction.

Your comment about bringing shame to the Corbin team and Community is so far out in left field that it is almost down right hiliarious. Not playing Bell Co. will not make or brake this team or community. I think you need to keep things in perspective when talking about the rich tradition of Corbin Football. Corbin was fine before playing Bell Co. and they will be fine not playing Bell Co. To say that Coach Jewell has brought shame upon a community and HIS Team by not playing Bell Co. is again RIGHT DOWN HILIAIROUS. I think that you need to relax a little and enjoy life a little more and not take this stuff so serious. Your comment about Corbin dominating Southeast Kentucky football is a pipe dream, times have changed and so do the expectations of the Corbin FANATICS need to. Kids these days are not the same as they were back in the 70's and 80's when Corbin was dominate, not to mention that on most every Corbin State Championship team you had kids that were from the Tri County Area not just Corbin. This is in no way a dig at Corbin for having those kids from other schools playing for them, but I believe the success that Corbin was having in the 70's and 80's was a big reason that alot of those kids came and played for the Corbin Program. Also you have what I call the Billy Hicks effect on this community, he came here and turned this community from a Football community to also a Basketball community. With all that said this is Coach Jewells team and the reasons for him dropping Bell Co. from the schedule is HIS decision. The reasons behind it are alot deeper than you know.

"If you want to be the best, you got to beat the best," Rick Flair a great American. Corbin has to much tradition to dodge anyone. Next years team should be special and they need a tough schedule to get them ready for a playoff run.

If there was a good reason, why dont you share it with us? If its something else, please tell because it is a shame to think your coach is backing down from a game like that when you know he is a good enough coach with enough talent to beat Bell. Why run away now?

You are right, times have changed but thats no excuse to change the expectations for your program. There is no reason why Corbin can't be best football team in this area. We have the talent, the facilities and the support to make it go. Just because this isn't 1980 doesn't mean we can't be successful program anymore. Good coaches adapt to the kids and get the most out of them.

76,

This is just one of many examples. Public opinion is that we have resorted to dodging opponents, not something to be proud of.

It doesn't bother me that you think my opinion is funny and in left field. Alot of others around here must be in left field with me. I respect your opinion on the on the issue, and will not make fun of it. The good news is we do have Belfry on the schedule, but thats 2 hours farther than Log Mountain.

I can't remember any of these transfers from other tri-county area schools that played on the 76, 80 or the 82 championship teams. I'm not saying that Corbin has not had a fair share of transfers from other local schools over the years, I just don't recall any major contributions during the period from around 1975-1983 or so. Can you refresh my memory?

Hicks did change the focus of the kids when he started having a lot of success. The younger athletes seemed to really favor basketball for a period of time in Corbin.

By the way just doin some math corbin bell hasn't been a rivalry for 50 years bell hasnt been a consolodated school that long.

Am i right math man?

Bell County High School was around in the 50s, 60s and 70s, located on the road to Harlan about five miles from Pineville.

The new school, which opened in 84-85, just added Lone Jack High School to the old Bell County High School. Bell wasn't very good though until Hilton arrived in the mid 80s.

As a supporter of the Corbin program, I'd like this to be heard loud and clear: This is NOT Steve Jewells team, this is CORBINS team, period. It belongs to a community deeply rooted in football tradition, and Corbin football will exist long after Steve Jewell is no longer coach. Coach Jewell was put there to continue to build the tradition that is Corbin football. He is NOT Corbin football, and this is NOT "his" team. That train of thought is very much his problem.

Living in this town are several ex coaches, former players, fans, ect. who paid the price to build the Corbin program into a yearly 2A contender. This was happening before Steve Jewell was in Corbin, and probably before he was born. Very much a part of the tradition are the rivals we play. Among them, Middlesboro, South Laurel (in recent years), and of course the biggest, Bell County. Most of the community, at some point in history, are directly involved in these rivalries either by playing, cheering, or simply coming out to support the team. Other than a few posters from Corbin on here, I cannot find a Corbin fan who supports the decison to drop Bell. By dropping this rivalry Steve Jewell is throwing away 50 years worth of blood, sweat and tears from thousands of Corbin Alumni. The Coach wasn't thinking about those folks when he dropped Bell, he was only thinking about himself and how Dudley has been smacking him around in the last few meetings. I would venture to say thats the main reason people like Coach T and the Math Man are so upset. Jewell is not preserving the proud tradition of Corbin by dropping the #1 rival we have.

Talk to any Redhound fan in this town, Bell County is a game the players AND entire town looks forward to each year. If you could have looked down main street the week before the Bell game last year, you would have seen several businesses whose windows were clad in Redhound spirit, with red and white paw prints all around. Steve Jewell took an exciting part of Redhound football away from this community. While we will go on supporting these kids, and this program. We do not have to agree with everything the Coach does, simply because the team really does not belong to him, it belongs to this town, and those who helped build it. If we stay quiet when bad things happen to the program, then we too are responsible for the programs suffering just as much as Coach Jewell.

It was'nt much of a rivaly in the 70's to 81 the redhounds owned Bell. so I don't know about 50 years of it.And I think Jewall runs the show right. And When he wins one people will ride his ship. Not everbody but most.

Very well put.

I know of 4 on the 80 team.
I know of 4 on the 80 team.

Who were they?

I know Brent Freeman came down from Cumberland back in the 70's. Didn't coach Jewell come from Somerset or Wayne County?

Roy Taylor & Greg Taylor moved here for one reason to play FOOTBALL.

The Brock brothers from North Laurel County moved here for one reason to play FOOTBALL.

Several players that came from what should have been Lynn Camp students.

Some of you guys want to call Coach Jewell out over this, get the facts. The biggest problem is not Coach Jewell. The biggest problem is a former Redhound, Tommy Greer and his actions.

Roy & Greg Taylor went to grade school in Corbin, but maybe they moved here then to eventually play football at Corbin.

I can't recall the Brock brothers from North Laurel, when did they play?

Tommy Greer works for Bell Co. and that is where his priorities should be.
