Beechwood 14 Mayfield 13 (2A State Championship)

Couldn’t disagree with you more. It was evident yesterday that 1 QB is immobile with a cannon of an arm. It was proved true during the gauntlet first half of the season that the other has true field vision, escapability, and an arm. Why would anyone discount an open QB battle at this point?  If you do, you’re biased. Open it up, best man wins. But to close a competition at this point is crazy to me. Bottom line is two good options for a HS football team. With Flaherty and the other stud RBs, I’m going with the Hergott style. It’s proven. ?

Let the fun begin.

  • Mayfield was in the state championship within a year of a devastating tornado. Hats off to those kids and that coaching staff

Congratulations to the Beechwood Tigers. What a game. Very proud of this Cardinal team. Not a lot of people expected us to be there. What a game. The two best teams definitely made it to the finals.

Can we just book Beechwood and Mayfield for the finals every year? They've delivered on the hype in all three championship encounters - '95, '02, & today. The blood is blue. The unis are vint

That’s not even the most exciting news for next year. Big 2A transfer coming home starting January! HUGE!!! Mayfield will be there again next year!!!

If this is true, I don’t see how Mayfield isn’t the favorite to win it all next year. I hope it’s true.

Oh I wasn’t going to say anything about that, but yes.

People have their biases. Some of the people commenting on here (not you) may have their own motives for stirring this up. Those who watched Cash through youth and middle school football and the first half of this year think he is the greatest. Those who watched Clay through youth football and freshman ball and the second half of this year think he is the greatest. They are both very talented. They both played a big role this season in Beechwood winning #17. I enjoyed watching both of them this year and hope to see both of them for the rest of their high school careers at Beechwood.

I disagree with some of your assessment of both of them. Now everyone has seen both of them play a half season of varsity football. Both have skills and both have things to improve on. The fans of each of them with their built up biases aren't going to change their mind. I agree with you that there are two great options. The goal is put the lineup on the field that will win #18. I trust the coaching staff with 7 titles and 5 in the last 6 years will be able to make that happen. They figured it out this year through a mess of injury challenges and won a title. They will figure it out next year.

It’s obvious the coaching staff collectively knows what to do to put banners on the Hood field house. No one is disputing that. But this years banner to me was clearly hung by the BW defense and special teams doing what they do. I think we’d all have to agree that watching an offense with skill weapons like McCormick, Robinson, Linder, Aylor, Courtney, Flaherty, etc only put up 13 pts is concerning. It is to me at least. All I’m saying, and all I’ve ever said, is kids should be able to compete for positions.  Always.  And Beechwood actually has 3 great options at QB.  The 3rd never got a sniff…..

Defense and special teams - almost exactly like the previous two years.

Beechwood offensive production the last 3 title games:

2020 - Beechwood offense 284 yards and 17 points (regulation)

2021 - Beechwood offense 277 yards and 23 points

2022 - Beechwood offense 271 yards and 14 points

Defense and Special teams plays:

2020 - BW field goal with 4 minutes left ties the game; BW blocks extra point kick in OT to get the win

2021 - BW field goal with 1:50 to go for the win; BW defense stops LCA on downs outside of field goal range

2022 - BW's new kicker hits both XP that gives them the margin for victory; Excellent punting by Cusick flips field position averaging 41 yards per punt; BW kickoffs go into the end zone; both factors keep Mayfield return team from making an impact; Tigers defense holds powerful Mayfield offense to 13 points

It has been defense and special teams the last three years that led Beechwood to the win. The offense has produced the same in all three games.

Defense wins championships. I’d love to know the stat on how many points the 1st Team Defense gave up all season. 50-60? Maybe?

The teams that scored a TD on Beechwood's first team defense were Covington Catholic, Dixie Heights, Lloyd, Carroll County and Mayfield. Only Covington Catholic and Mayfield scored more than 7 points against Beechwood's first team defense. I believe 58 points allowed by the first team, with 31 of them to Covington Catholic. First team defense allowed 27 points in the other 14 games.

Talk about stingy defense. Wow. I knew the defense was special, but didn’t realize they were that good this year.

Is the transfer coming from Murray?

So would you say this is the best defense Beechwood has ever had in school history?

Can’t really let that one out for good reason, but this Big transfer might be the X factor.
