Looked under center to me, but how it got kicked ahead of the line of scrimmage... I have no idea.

Snap was under center.

So hard to tell from that what happened, and I can't imagine the side view would reveal anymore.  I watched it frame by frame, looked like it hit the QBs hand. Probably couldn't close his hands on it and then it got knocked forward by the center.  It's just crazy that it managed to make it clear of the linemen in front of them.  Even if Male had just fallen on the ball, they'd have still had a shot at a goalline stand.  It going clear behind the line was the worst case for Ballard, because likely none of them had a clear enough view to even know it had happened.

That's right.  If you get the snap, the worst case scenario is that you do give up a safety.  But to fumble the snap and have it bounce that way is just horrible luck.

Something like 25 seconds and Male was out of timeouts.

Yes, you can see the scoreboard in the video above. Male player went into the end zone with the loose ball with 24 seconds on the clock. 

With that much time left, no way I take the safety. 

Made my stomach sick watching it for those Ballard kids. 

I feel so bad for the Ballard coaches, players, and fans. This is what makes playoff time special, but someone has to unfortunately be in the other side. 

The only way I see taking a safety is to pull a Baltimore Ravens.

In the Super Bowl they took a safety by snapping the ball and purposely holding the entire time. It prevented the defense from getting to the ball running more time off the clock.

Twelve seconds on the clock and a lot more room to work with. Different situation. 

(Side note - virtually every Ravens player was holding the man they were blocking on that play. They didn't care in that situation. It bought them a few more seconds off the clock. Holding in the end zone is a safety and they were taking the safety anyway so no loss if they call holding.)

In this situation, ball on the goal line, if Ballard takes the safety Male get the ball with 20 seconds left and a field goal wins the game for them. How good a kicker does Male have?
