Looking at the various brackets online and it says they re-bracket based on RPI beginning with the November 18th round (3rd Round). 

 

How does the re-bracket format work, I am unfamiliar with this. 

 

Do they re-bracket all 8 teams who remain based on the RPI and seed 1 through 8 or do they re-bracket after every round?

 

 

Round 3 is a re-bracket of the top 4 east teams and the top 4 west teams based on RPI. The top remaining RPI team for the east and west regions will become the the one seeds, down to the second best remaining RPI all the way down to the 4th worst RPI of the remaining teams for each region. 

Once the Semi-Final teams are set, they re-bracket the last 4 teams per highest RPI playing the lowest remaining RPI, and the two middle RPI teams playing each other, no matter the region. Top two RPI teams also get home field advantage.

They re-bracket based on RPI starting in 3rd round. The 3rd round however is divided into the East and West. The semi-state won’t be divided by east and west.

In 3A, Bardstown and Cal would go opposite of each other in the third round and wouldn't meet until the final four (4th Round)

In 4A, Lexington Catholic and Boyle won't meet until the final four or state (4th Round) rather than the third round as well?

I like good football games.  But, let's call this what it is:  pandering to the people.  People were upset about blowouts in the finals and some classes being dominated by one half of the state or the other.  So, this helps to fix both perceived problems.  

I'm not saying it's necessarily right or wrong, just, "this is what many people asked for, and they got it".

Those two in 4A would meet in the third round so long as Corbin advances to the third round.  They are #2 and #3 in RPI in Districts 5-8, with Corbin being #1.  So if all three advance to the third round, Corbin would play whoever the #4 team is that made it to the third round from those districts (probably Johnson Central), and Boyle County would host Lexington Catholic (which is hilarious because LexCath won that district). 

It is impossible for Bardstown and CAL to meet before the state finals, as they are the top two teams in 3A RPI.  There is no scenario where they could match because the third round is 1 v 4 and 2 v 3 on each side, and then the same for the semifinals for everyone left.  1 only faces 2 in the finals.

I think the RPI needs tweaking but it's given us some pretty good finals.

I live close to Ohio, they have had a version of RPI for years and I have listened to them complain about teams that should be in the playoffs, not making the playoffs, for years.  

To be honest, I don't know what we (the KHSAA) are doing.  We let, virtually, everyone in the playoffs, then we use a RPI to rank them in the 3rd and 4th rounds.  There has to be some common ground. 

Does the RPI stop end of regular season, or still update weekly?

I don't think it's pandering at all, and I don't think the purpose has anything to do with the two reasons you mention. Reranking teams in round 3 doesn't do anything to eliminate blowouts. The complaint people have is blowouts in the first two rounds, and RPI has zero impact on the first two rounds except breaking 3 way ties in district. If anything it makes blowouts more likely in rounds 3 and 4 because the highest ranked teams will play the lowest ranked teams. It also doesn't affect one half of the state dominating the playoffs for the same reason. If two teams from one half of the state are both ranked one and two, they won't see each other until the semi-finals. 

The whole purpose for RPI is to bracket the later rounds of the playoffs in a way that prevents the top teams from meeting each until the finals. That's how most major playoff events are bracketed/setup. That's not pandering, that's just doing your best to run a good tournament. I think what they've done is fine. We have no arguments about good teams getting left out, like the problem you mention in Ohio, AND we have a method to separate the best teams to prevent them from meeting before the finals. What more common ground do you want or need?  I wish all our playoffs were set up and at least seeded rather than silly random draws.

Would certainly like to see Bardstown vs. Cal in the State Finals. Even with injuries to major players, Bardstown has kept their season winning streak without a loss for the second year in a row. Now we will have to see how they will handle the playoffs. Mentally, it is a different pressure that comes in the playoffs. Good Luck to the Tigers!!!

Are you saying you would rather have everyone complain about teams that are not allowed in the playoffs versus complain about teams that are allowed into the playoffs?

Comparing apples to anvils.  In Ohio, they are complaining about teams that are 7-3 not making the playoffs because they didn't get enough points in their system.  Kentucky has 0-10 teams making the playoffs.
