I watched that Paintsville team play a couple of times and IMO there is no way the beat todays HHS team.

Who said they would play man-to-man? A "big" zone defense is probably what Paintsville would play which would force HHS to beat them from the outside, which I don't think they could do.

 

You guys are looking at these match-ups like it's a one-on-one matchup at every position and it isn't. 5-on-5 I like Paintsville '96s chances very well.

 

BTW...Individually, I'd take VanHoose or Craig Ratliff matching up against Patterson anyday of the week.

I respect your opinion about Paintsville chances but have you witnessed this HHS team? Its a track meet from start to finishand no matter what kind of defense they used would not matter. Mayo and Williams are deadly behind the arc. Here is highlight from a game earlier. Granted the Spring Valley team they're playing against isnt much but its a glimpse of what there about.

FWIW, Paintsville wasn't ranked #1 in Kentucky when the tournament started. That honor belonged to Paducah. On the other hand HHS is ranked top 5 in the country. All of Paintsville's players returned the next year and then didn't win it, I don't see how they are in the same boat as HHS.

 

Actually only two starters returned. Josh Mckenzie, Craig Ratliff (30 pts in the 96' championship game), and Matt Ratliff graduated.

I was going to say, that Paintsville team had 2 big men and one was a senior on that championship team. Ratliff was a very good HS player.

He was a great player I got to see that '96 team play quite a few times. They were pretty tough.

It looks like an And One game to me... I'm anxious to see what they do when they have to run a half court offense and when Novacel blocks them out - every time a shot goes up. What are they going to do when someone stands up to them and plays physical on every cut? A team like Huntington who keeps taking bad shots and throwing bad passes just to showboat gives a good solid Kentucky team an opportunity to beat them. It should be fun to watch Catholic and Scott Co. give it their best shot. I'm not saying LC or SC SHOULD, but they COULD...

I don't know exactly what kind of team Woodrow Wilson (Beckley, WV) has this year, but in the past they've had teams that would give HHS fits.

 

Either last year or the year before North College Hill played Woodrow Wilson in the Mountain Coal Classic and barely escaped with a win. Again, I have no idea what type of team they have this year, but from the 90s on they have been the team to beat in WV.

I remember playing against Todd Tackett, Craig Ratliff and company as well as playing against Jeremy Hall, Charles Thomas, and some other big itme D1 guys and they were as good is not better.

 

 

Didn't Paintsville beat some big time teams in Minn. and South Carolina at that time too like Top 5 teams in the country.

Just some food for thought about the Paintsville teams of the 90s. I did some research at the Paintsville library this morning and thought I would share:

 

Paintsville defeated Lexington Catholic on February 21, 1997, 82-78. Lex. Cath was the #1 team in KY (with a record of 27-0) at the time and was ranked in the Top 20 Nationally. Paintsville began the 1997 season with a national ranking of #19 and VanHoose was ranked as the nation's 5th best player by recruiting guru Bob Gibbons. All info. from the Paintsville Herald.

 

According to the Paintsville Weekly Progrss of December 17, 1997 Paintsville defeated the nation's #2 ranked high school team Governor Dummer Academy of Massachusetts in a game in St. Louis 70-64 in OT. That team had current NBA center Dan Gadzuric (Milwaukee Bucks) who was considered the best high school center in the country at the time. Gadzuric had 26 points and 14 rebounds. J. R. VanHoose of Paintsville had 32 points and 14 rebounds in the game.

 

Paintsville then played the nation's #4 ranked team St. Patrick, NJ with Al Harrington (currently Indiana Pacers) in the Slam Dunk To the Beach Tournament in Lewes, Delaware on Dec. 28, 1997. Paintsville lost 70-59. Harrington had 26 points and 13 rebounds, VanHoose had 22 points and 12 rebounds.

 

In the same tournament Paintsville played the nation's #3 ranked team Dominguez (Compton, CA) and lost 73-70. For Dominguez Tayshaun Prince (Detroit Pistons) had 22 points and 21 rebounds, Tyson Chandler (Chicago Bulls) had 15 points and VanHoose had 29 points and 8 rebounds. All of the above players, including VanHoose made the All-Tournament Team. - Both of the above games were covered in the Paintsville Herald - January 1, 1998.

 

Just thought I would share and allow everyone to debate using this information. Paintsville could play with HHS and I think it would be a great game. Paintsville played the same competition as HHS and against some great players and held their own and won some games as well. I threw in the VanHoose stats because he has been "matched-up" against Patterson in this thread. Against the competiton he played I think he would have had at least a double-double against Patterson, he played against the same type of competiton before!! Hope this helps, it sure wore me out looking for this stuff!!!!!!!!
