If anyone on here thinks a KY school can come within 15 points oh H-Town then go check yourself. They are dangerous and for those who have the chance to watch them when playing our in state teams, then please go do so. They are a treat.

Has there ever been a KY team that has had five or six Division 1-A scholarship players on it, including two future NBA players? In addition, one of those players being, at one time, a basketball prodigy, in OJ Mayo.

If you are a Kentucky High School basketball partisan as I am it is difficult to make a fair appraisal until Huntington play a Ky. team.They do that this weekend against a very good but not great Lexington Catholic team.LC has played a very difficult schedule and have already played teams that are on par or ranked ahead of Huntington nationally.

Huntington is not deep.Of course when you have 5-6 potential D-1 prospects depth is not a needed attribute(unless foul trouble occurs).Please pay attention to Bruce Senior, a very valuable but underappreciated member of the Huntington team.He does a lot of the grunt work and is a good rebounder.

It will be interesting to see how Huntington plays tonight.I believe this will be the first game all year that they have played on the home court of an opponent.They play at South Charleston and the gym only seats about 900 most of whom will be rooting heavily against Huntington.SC is 3-1 and ranked 9th in WV AAA.

BTW according to some stats I saw yesterday the three leading scorers for Huntington are:Mayo(30ppg),Patterson(18 ppg) and Williams(16ppg).

The 1961 Ashland team had five who received D-1 scholarships. However, even with Conley and Sergent, they did not have anyone as talented as Mayo.

The Layfatted team with Minnifield is tha only team with a prayer that I could see. I would just like to see Mayo and Darrell Griffith go on on one. What a sight that would be.

The only teams that would have had a chance were the Male team with Bobby Turner and the Griffith guy and the Ballard team that Frances mentioned.

 

HHS would beat Clay Co and Paintsville by 30 and it's good to see that a member of JR Vanhoose's family is posting under the name JD if you please.

 

I know you are partial to the Rose Hill/HHS kids for whatever reason, but I know JD and he is far from related to VanHoose or anyone else from Paintsville.

 

Also, I've saw that particular Paintsville team numerous times and this particular HHS team a couple of times. HHS is superior in athletic ability only, IMO. Paintsville was big, decently athletic, and as fundamentally sound as they come. They beat teams all across the country who matched Huntington's athletic ability and it wouldn't surprise me at all if either team won this hypothetical match-up.

 

BTW...The 1996 Paintsville team is the best KY Title team I've seen since I started attending the tourney in '93, for what that's worth.

HHS could be playing South Charleston in Rupp Arena with 24,500 fans cheering for South Charleston, and the full UK pep band playing the South Charleston fight song at every break and time out, and I really don't think it would make a two point difference in the outcome.

I could put together a pretty good group of hackers from Noon Ball from the Ashland YMCA. OJ wouldnt be able to walk after playing against Jerry Daily and Perry Dalton. Oh yeah and the Hornbuckle guy would light them up, OJ would probably get some attorneys from Dewey Cheetam and Howe and sue the Ashland Y.........

Who would guard Williams and Taylor. Fact is that Paintsville could not match the athleticlism and speed of HH. It would be pretty hard for NAIA type players to control the tempo of the game against D-1 and NBA caliber athlete's.

We all admired that Paintsville team but, on its best night, it couldn't come within 20 points of this HHS team. HHS would run them into the ground. Too slow inside. Actually, the same can be said of the 1961 Ashland team although I believe most would say that it was certainly superior to the Paintsville team.

Also, there is no answer for Mayo off the dribble, but Early wouldn't worry me the least, especially against a zone.

I would probably take the 1995 Breckinridge team to win, as well. Probably the best TEAM that I have ever watched in person.

FWIW, Paintsville wasn't ranked #1 in Kentucky when the tournament started. That honor belonged to Paducah. On the other hand HHS is ranked top 5 in the country. All of Paintsville's players returned the next year and then didn't win it, I don't see how they are in the same boat as HHS.
