Centurions March To The Top Of The Polls; Aces Are High

Records: CAL (4-0) | O-Cath (2-2)

BGP Ranking: CAL (#1 in 3A) | O-Cath (#4 in 2A)

Series History: CAL leads 1-0 all-time

Table Setter: The winning teams from the two most buzz inducing games of Week 4 will meet this Friday in Louisville. CAL outscoring its first three opponents 135-0 shouldn't surprise anyone, but the 49-14 thumping they put on LCA turned some heads. The Centurions turned a one score game at halftime into a blowout by owning the second half by a 28-0 margin. Even with Cutter Boley sitting the final two quarters, this was a statement to the rest of 3A. We already suspected CAL was good enough to contend for a title, but last week they looked like the class favorite.

If there was a score from last Friday that caused more double takes than CAL's, it would have to be Owensboro Catholic's 21-17 triumph over Owensboro. O-Cath aced its biggest test of the season behind a stellar defensive effort. That side of the ball will have to show up big again against a team averaging a 3A best 46 ppg. The upset of the Red Devils has solidified O-Cath's spot in the top five of 2A and installed the Aces as the preeminent darkhorse of the class, capable of making things interesting against the teams ahead of them on their best night.

The Centurions ran the clock on the Aces last year, but there's one vital component missing from CAL's arsenal: Easton Messer did a lot of damage for the victors that night, covering nearly 300 yards on six offensive touches and a pick-six. No one player is likely to replace his big play ability this year, which could give this game a different complexion.

I think time strikes midnight on Cinderella O-Cath and CAL gets the win.

I’m sure Cal will win but if OC keeps it in single digits I think that might prove to 2A that they are for real assuming Friday’s win didn’t convince them.

CAL is in a different league.

I agree, but I'm super impressed with OCath this year.

That was a real 5A team they beat on Friday and it wasn't a fluke as they outgained Owensboro by about 80 yards on the night.

CAL wins the game but the Catholic defense is for real.  Their linebackers are as good as any in the State and they love to hit.  They bottled up OHS and Carbon all night long.  Atwell is a QB that is growing with each game.  They will have to be reckoned with come 2A playoff time and next year this team will be really scary as they return just about every major player next season.

Catholic Cinderella story continues here. I think it will be closer then most might think.

Hopefully CALs depth doesn’t come in to play  here. Catholic suffered a couple of key injuries last week and they aren’t the deepest team to begin with. I think they keep it close with a shot to win it late if they can contain CALs QB.

They are good but I wouldn’t go this far.  Union beat them I think with 33 points.  450 yards from Union?  O telegraphed all night. Only pass in passing downs and Carbon gets 22 carries out of 33 plays.  Too predictable playcalling by O.

Cal up 21-15 at the half

CAL 52 Owensboro 15

Final
