Who is your school's best Coach of all time?

Featured Replies

From Silver Grove it would have to be Steve Hart. He did a great job with a program that was as far in the basement as it could possibly be when he took over. He has made the program into what it is now. His last 7 years coaching at Silver Grove he won or tied for 5 conference championships, led Silver Grove to the All "A" regional final against Brossart in 2001 (also believe that was the year that Brossart made it to the state Sweet Sixteen). He never made it to the regional tournament but he was screwed out of one in 2000 when Silver Grove lost by 1 to Campbell County in the semi-final round of the districts (also the year that Campbell made it to the state Sweet Sixteen). He also did a great job with the kids that he coached. Everyone who has ever played for him will always consider him one of thier friends for life.

Steve Sigmon also did a great job when he had the boys varsity team i believe in the 70's and early 80's.

We will also be talking about Tony Bacigalupo as one of the best too because he has done a great job in the 2 years that he has been the varsity head coach at Silver Grove.

  • Holy Cross has had many very good coaches over the years including Ralph Kemphaus, Jeff Trame & Clay Eifert. However, the best ever at HC without a doubt is George Schneider!

Brossart won the 10th region in 2000. Campbell County won it in 2001.

Brossart- Willie Schlarman

Willie Schlarman is only as good as his assistant coach....it was Mike Code at Brossart. (Probably because of his assistant coach at Highlands. Josh Feldman) And look how Brossart is doing...great. Highlands....terrible.

I hope you are not saying that Willie Schlarman is not a good coach. If that is what you are saying then you dont follow high school basketball their coaches very well. Willie Schlarman is a great coach and Highlands will be a very good team the next couple years. They have a very young ball team this year and they play tough teams night in and night out. I played against Willie's Brossart teams for 4 years and they were always very talented. Don't get me wrong tho, Coack Mke Code is a great coach also.

Mr. T - You've burst onto the BGP scene with one of its most disrespectful statements.

Willie Schlarman and Mike Code are both excellent coaches. They are also both out of the same mold.

Superior defense, discipline, and high percentage shooting.

Willie may have hit on some tough times while getting the Highlands program untracked but that is certainly not indicitive of his coaching ability. You know the old saying about making chicken salad.

Mike Code is also a tremendous coach. Brilliant stratagist and superb teacher of the game. He truly understands what other coaches are striving to learn. I've worked for seven Brossart head coaches and none have the working knowledge of this game that Mike Code possesses.

We are indeed fortunate to have had one or the other as our head coach since 1997 and for two years had both on the same staff. In addition they are both fortunate to have had Bob Rowe developing their JVs, and during the Code era, having both Code brothers calling our shots.

It isn't about wins and losses. It's about taking the hand that you are dealt and maximizing their collective talents, while keeping them happy, healthy, and hungry. The end result is that they will be as successful as they can possibly be.

Willie is without a doubt a GREAT coach. He just needs players with the right mindset. That mindset is hardnosed, blue collar kids that will do anything to be able to win. I'm not worried at all for him at Highlands, if there is ever a guy that would bring Highlands back on top, it would be Willie.

BTW, I know that the Highlands Head Coaching job was down to Scott Draud and Willie Schlarman. If Scott would have got the job, you'd be saying the samething just with a different name.

Personally I wish Mike Code would not teach at Highlands either. Any openings at BB?

Hicks for Scott Co. is a great practice coach but not much in games

You probably pay too well down there Oldbird!! :D

Don't know if this statement is true or not LC, but I was never impressed with the job Scott did at Dixie?? He had a ton of talent when he was out on Dixie Highway!! I thought he was going the administration route anyway, and was done with coaching??

My gosh, he's only won about 675 of them, including about about 14 in the Sweet 16. I'll tell you what Catzrule we would love to have him down here.

You can't argue against numbers I understand but I promise you that anyone off the street could have coached several teams he has. I just dont agree with some things he does or the lack of changes after half time in some games. Don't get me wrong Billy is a great guy and a winner but not necessarly the smartest coach.

I don't think you understand. Part of the reason he has such good players is that he works CONSTANTLY building the program. He has tons of summer camps for the younger generation of Cardinals - teaching them the skills and developing the relationships that make a program great. Someone "off the street" and THE MAJORITY of high school coaches don't have the committment coach Hicks does. As far as half-time adjustments go - he and his staff may fine tune a few things, but SC does what they do - trap/pressure/push the ball. That's how they practice and that's how they play games.

You are entitled to your opinion - I just think you are way wrong.

He's way wrong. About a year or two after Hicks retires or decides to build that one last program he Catz will see how wrong he was.

IMO, if you were building a program Billy Hicks should be everyone's number one choice of who they would want. I am not sure who number 2 would be, but the distance between number 1 and number 2 would be significant.
