Sharpe joins UK in January. Middle of January, he becomes eligible for the NBA draft. That changed everything. All thoughts and plans Sharpe and Cal had changed with that announcement. If you want to fault someone, fault lies with the NBA. Sharpe is not going to risk being a lottery pick by playing 10 games for UK.

No Cal is at fault here by recruiting a kid that he probably knew in the back of his mind that if he became eligible somehow for the NBA that he was gone. He should have recruited someone who he 100 percent knew wasn't going to be eligible for the NBA. The bottom line is Kentucky didn't need the kid if he wasn't going to play. I'd rather of had a high 4 star player that was guaranteed to at least step on the court than 5 star Sharpe who did  nothing in a UK uniform. At least the high 4 star would have potentially got UK past the 1st round.

Ok I get that, but you are ignoring the fact there was no wasted scholarship. The 4 star player you are talking about did not reclassify and enroll in January 2022. There was nothing gained or lost in this situation. It was not an either/or.

He wasn't even supposed to be apart of this years team.  You're saying that he shouldn't have recruited the top player in 2023, and instead should have recruited a high 4 star for 2022.

Yeah there was a wasted scholarship. He went against the scholarship limit. Cal could have just as easily recruited a high 4 star in the class of 2022 originally instead of wasting it on a kid who never stepped stepped on the court in a real game.

He was part of this years team he was on scholarship that makes him part of this years team. He was in class, was he not? Yes that's exactly what I'm saying that a high 4 star would have played.

You realize Sharpe declared his intent to redshirt at UK in November, not last summer? The scholarship was there whether or not Sharpe came to UK.

He was still on scholarship and getting a college education while your average person is paying big bucks back to their student loan after they graduate. He used UK to get a free education and didn't play a game.

What I'm saying is cal let the kid use UK. Free education and no games played that isn't  what I call a student athlete. He was there to play basketball and get an education which would then truly qualify him for that free education he got.  The kid most most definitely should have went to the gleague where he could have put all his time into basketball if he wasn't going to play.

 

There is no way I see that this kid shouldn't have played.  I'm not going to change my opinion on that.

If we are still pretending college athletics is nothing more than this wholesome student-athletic model whereby a kid earns a college degree and ignore the fact it is a multi-billion dollar industry, then yeah, you got me. I would still contend whether Sharpe took one dribble with the team or did anything besides major in "eligibility," the decision to give him a half-year scholarship - especially given the nuanced circumstance - is well worth the investment. Fans were riled up to see if the dude was shooting before a game. If he blows up in the NBA and identifies as a former UK Wildcat in any capacity, it more than pays for itself... if it hasn't already since we see "University of Kentucky" up on draft boards next to his name on mock drafts.

Kentucky is Kentucky though. I don't think one kid will make that much of difference in Kentucky's recruiting. Most kids right now know all about Kentucky's history already from 2012 and Anthony Davis etc. I  follow Kentucky recruiting sites closely and see all the kids wanting an offer.

I believe UK's basketball program is self-funded.

It still doesn't matter.  Sharpe enrolling and getting a scholarship did not cause some random kid who wanted to come to have to bear a bigger financial burden.

Let's call it for what it is.  People are angry about UK losing early and/or frustrated with Calipari and this is one way to vent.  People who have absolutely no stake in the game are trying to dictate what someone who has all the stake in the game should do.
