Lets just talk about 22. Mayfield is 8 - 1 against Beechwood. Mayfield hasn't played Beechwood when they've had weak teams and visa versa.

Yeah I agree on that. But if Mayfield had beat those teams the week before it would be a lot closer than 8-1.

  • I can't help but wonder what kind of team we will field next year.  All the physical componets were undamaged but there will be some families forced to move to other places to find housing and jobs fo

  • Agree R1 Sports Fan as Mayfield is young and will definitely be a contender in 2A. 2A should be very competitive in 2022- any other teams to watch out for as I can see the following (apologize if any

Mayfield doesn't play catch up. They've been to 10 of the last 12 State Championship playoffs.

If we use your math and give 1998 to Mayfield it would be 9 to 6 in favor of Mayfield which would not be nearly as bad.  It is all fun to think about but Mayfield still owns Beechwood.

The 98 Middlesboro team was loaded though. So there wasn’t a chance for a Beechwood Mayfield title game.

I'm gonna go ahead and throw it out there, after 2 long hard years of suffering, I think Mayfield is the early favorite for next year.  Speaking of the 98 Middlesboro team, the 2 players that still standout in my memory are the kicker (a Wynn kid maybe) and the noseguard.  Great team that left no doubt against a really good Mayfield squad.  I have often wondered how in the world Bell Co beat them that year.

Are you picking them as the favorite because of what they return or because of what everyone else loses?

That team I saw in Ft. Mitchell was extremely small and not very fast. I’m honestly curious as to what makes you think they’re the favorite?

They do lose a good group of seniors. I like the Starks kid, and Rogers kid. I’m not sure anyone else wows me compared to what they’ve had In the past. Dabney is fast if they figure out what to do with him.

I think Danville is a year away if they can keep kids from going to Boyle County. They have a great Freshman Class.

I’ve been hearing Danville is a year away since 2018. Their 8th grade team did have a great year and either made it to the conference finals or won it.

Slow, not at all, they are quick, I would question the Beechwood game as well, they were out manned and laid an egg.  I've seen every game every year and alot of the main competitions games on film and would not get caught up in judgement from 1 game.  Just look at Herogat's game with Mayfield for example vs Mayfield in 2019.  From that game he looked very average.  The last 2 years was no suprise for anyone who is a avid follower and the progression to get back to the top would be right where one would expect.  If Cartwright can continue to improve, outside the egg vs Beechwood he was pretty good, look at his stats, it will give us the pass and run punch that we have not had the last 2 years and he has the RB in Starks who will be one of the best backs in the state.  Looking at what the other big 2 lost to graduation and what I think we have back is why I draw my conclusion.  While I am certainly only a armchair QB and its only my opinion, but I have been evaluating with a decent degree of accuracy for the last 30 years. I may be off and certainly I am biased pro Mayfield.  Being a armchair QB I can always change my tune if its not going my way.

I’m not talking about those years now am I? I’m talking about 1996,1997, 1999 and 2007 and 2008. Beechwood would have won all of those games played.

1998 wound have been a toss up since Middlesboro beat both teams.

I agree none of those Mayfield teams were up to snuff and wouldn't have beat Beechwood, or alot of other good teams.

Their offense was good.  Their defense was lock down.  They only scored two touchdowns in title game, the rest were field goals.  Mayfield just couldn't move the ball, and also missed on several deep passes that were open but couldn't be pulled in.  Michael Dawson (freshman RB) had his best game of the season and appeared to have a bright future.  He subsequently tore his ACL during basketball that winter and was never the same.

If your a Mayfield fan, you have to be excited, in 2019 it was the largest rebuild in 20+ years and this year the Cards made big strides but everyone was pretty sure the final 4 was the likely ceiling.  With the returning players the Cards should be the juggernaut of old. The steady improvement of Sophmore QB Cartwright was significant this year and if he contines to improve the Cards will have the other pieces of the puzzle needed.  The recieving corps should be outstanding with Stephenson and Jackson back who both had great seasons this year and Starks back at running back is going to be huge.  Having all state linebacker Rogers back from his injury on defense is huge and will anchor the best linbacking core Mayfield has had in some time.  I looked over the returning players and stats for LCA and Beechwood.   LCA lost 6 on defense and 7 on offense while Beechwood lost 5 on offense and 6 on defense.  Im guessing the QB spot will be the telling sopt for Beechwood next year and it looks like the replacement will be young.

It will be interesting to see what Murray looks like next year.  The new head coach Bowling has a handful of state titles in Tennessee and upset Mayfield this year.

All that sounds really good to win West KY games.. are they getting any better along the OL and DL to play with Beechwood and LCA?

They have a really nice freshman class. I think they will compete next year with LCA in their district. The Current Sophomores and Juniors lost there best players. Sage Dawson to Boyle. Dryston Turner to Tennessee. Josh Bixler to Anderson County. You add them to Danville and they would've been really good next year. So like I said a year away from being back to Danville Standards.

Their MLB Floyd Branham was a beast. I have never seen someone on the defense side take over a game like that.

Some things are much bigger than football...thoughts and prayers to the people of Mayfield and the surrounding area. It sounds like the storms did major damage.
