I quit caring about this June 2, 1990.  LOL

I mean, not to get technical, but posting about not caring about it since the day, I assume you graduated, on a forum dedicated to Kentucky High School Football may not be the best way to make your point?

Anyone know why Highlands stopped playing in kmsaa...? For couple years they played in it and was in NKy Norseman conference with RYLE, COOPER, CONNER, BOONE, LEXINGTON CATHOLIC feeder programs. Then played in state middle school playoffs.  Now I guess they're playing in NKy middle school league?

My guess is because at the time, there were only 3 or 4 other teams in the norsemen conference and they were all Boone co schools. NKMSAA has more teams and they’re closer to fort thomas. It’s also a true middle school league, and 99% of highlands players go to highlands middle school. The Norseman teams are made up of kids from multiple middle schools. That’s why they can’t play in the NKMSAA. You must attend the school you play for. Union Raiders isn’t a school.

It would be a lot more interesting if the 6 Boone County middle schools all fielded their own teams and played in the NKMSAA with everyone else. Each has the enrollment to do it.

NKMSAA Teams…

Bellevue

Campbell County

Covington Catholic

Beechwood

Dayton

Brossart

Bracken County

Ludlow

Newport

Newport Central Catholic

Sharp

Highlands

Holmes

Tichenor

Walton-Veron

Summit View

Twenhofel

Turkeyfoot

Woodland

I know the Union Raider program is and always has been designated as a feeder programs for Ryle HS. With how the district is broken down, you can have kids from multiple middle schools who all in fact are in Ryle's district. Kenton county has open enrollment, so kids can go to any school they choose. The way Boone districts are, HS feeder programs try to emphasize the future in keeping kids who will play together all the way thru HS. UR, when founded, tried to join NKYMSA, even though 95% of kids went to Gray, but because couple kids went to other schools, (still in Ryle's district) were called a select team and banned. Lexington Catholic is also in Norseman conference.

What’s the argument against middle school teams? It seems like a good chunk of these Norseman kids peel off and go somewhere else in high school anyway. Namely beechwood or covcath.

I believe most MS teams start as a feeder program to a HS. As mentioned, Boone Cty Middle Schools have some overlapping boundaries. For instance, Ockerman feeds Boone Cty, Cooper, and Ryle. I think it’s a little silly, but explainable.

What isn’t explainable is why teams from NKMSFL refuse to play Union Raiders at the MS level when they’ve been playing them for years in the NKYFL and will again in HS.

I don’t know if NKMSAA teams refuse to play them. They don’t NEED to play them. They already have a full schedule, and against teams who’s kids are all from the same school (minus CovCath and NewCath).

I disagree with the NKYFL comparison. Those teams are not high school feeders. Some may want to be, but they have too many kids that end up at multiple high schools. So it’s not apples to apples. The Red Devils are a perfect example. They’re one of the most dominant teams in the NKYFL, but will send kids to Highlands, Campbell Co., NewCath, Beechwood, and so on.

If I were in your shoes or a Norseman member looking to add more teams, I’d be going after CovCath and NewCath. They’re already on a slippery slope with the NKMSAA, as they are the only programs who aren’t really middle schools. They would be perfect for the Norsemen Conference.
