Ideally, yes, there is a LOT of knowledge gained by doing and being those things, but that doesn't mean you can coach. I'm pretty darn good at math. I've taken Calc 1, Calc 2 and Calc 3. I can't teach math worth a damn though.

This might be the greatest quote I have read in a while.  Nick Saban is the best college football coach in the history of the game and he is 5'6.  Being a great player does not make you a great coach.

I guess my main question is, Why weren't these things discussed in an interview?  Shouldn't both parties in an interview try to figure out if a particular job would be a good fit?  If not, don't take the job or hire the candidate.

Coach McCombs was beloved at Bryan Station the kids really miss him. A great players coach we keep hearing from the kids.

My guess would be that they probably were addressed and both sides probably agreed that they wouldn't be issues; however, saying it and actually not letting them become an issue is a lot different. 

I think it is also important to note that the days of teachers and para-professionals beating down doors to try to get into coaching are gone and probably never coming back. There are a lot of reasons for this that would be better suited for another thread, but the fact of the matter is a lot of HCs just don't have that many options anymore when they go to hire assistant coaches so they are forced to take what they can get and hope it works out.

Being a players coach is one thing.  Undermining the head coach by "buddying up" with the players is another.  Sounds like this has happened twice in less than 2 seasons.

This issue sounds to me that one word will sum it up.  Loyalty.  Those of us from the CU coaching factory know that Loyalty is by far the most important thing for any Head Coach to ask for and for any head coach to give.   Talent, Resume, Relationships with Kids, Parents, Community, Admin means nothing if you cant be loyal to the coach, the program, and the values being taught.  A disloyal assistant coach will ruin a teams culture, cause crazy strife and must be dealt with quickly. 

I believe it was Bruce Brown with Proactive Coaching who I heard say that “being a great athlete sometimes makes it harder to be a great coach.” People who were great players often did things instinctively that they expect their protégés to do instinctively. 
 

This impacts their relationships with players and their ability to implement a game plan. 

So the Ads face a loaded Lincoln Co team tomorrow night at home. Will this situation be resolved by then? 

Lot of drama around this program...hope for the kids and families of the community, this goes away. 

 

I believe there are still hard feelings from the firing of Coach Clevenger and the hiring of Coach Peach.  I’m not a Danville fan but it seems that the administration is not putting a lot of emphasis on football these days.
