Louisville shootings - how bad is it?

I believe there should have been a large investment in police to pay for more/better training, more officers and "better" officers to stop the hiring of the bad apples we have due to the poor pay of LMPD.  Instead, most think the answer was to defund, I think defund is an incredibly stupid idea

Defund, ha. As the old saying goes, You get what you pay for.

Two kids at bus stop shot this morning. Student from Eastern HS was identified as one of kids shot and has died. So sad! Hope those responsible are brought to justice!

We're seeing this all over the country.  Ohio State was forced to allocate more than 20 million dollars for enhanced campus security today.  They've had multiple shootings in broad daylight next to ca

  • I don't think they are random at all.  While the number is definitely up this year, it's more of the same in the "usual" neighborhoods.

Looks like someone was killed in a shootout with police in Louisville overnight.

I do not really see anything here about the increase in violent gang activity.  The economic/social factors of crime are understood.  And I know that makes certain parts of Louisville much rougher than others.  But the violence and killing is not geographically limited to poorer and racially segregated parts of Louisville.  It's drive-bys and shoot-outs in front of Methodists churches on Hikes Lane.  Or when a father and son is kidnapped in one part of town that is not poor and murdered in planned execution style later in the day.   This is not social/economic crime.  This is not even illegal trafficking turf battles that plague the disadvantage communities.  This is a different landscape.

Something from outside has come into the environment and changed to dynamic.

My mother finally felt the need to move after 59 years in the same house.  We are waiting on her new home in a 55 and over community in Wilmore to finish.  She will still hear occasional gunshots like she did in Louisville.   But I told her its normal around here since its close to hunting season.

Another violent day in Louisville. Everyday same headlines.

The biggest reason that we have an increase in shooters that are juveniles is the lack of consequences," Lt. Donnie Burbrink, LMPD homicide unit commander, said over the summer. "There are no consequences for these juveniles in this city, and they know it."

I feel like this could tie into our school violence thread as well. When I ask most colleagues why things are they way they are this is the answer. Kids know parents aren't going to do anything and if a school tries to they're met with backlash that just isn't worth it.

Eventually that can't touch me mentality leads to big crimes like this.
