February 5, 20206 yr Author Quit a couple of days after a $4 million retention bonus kicked in. I think it was a surprise for him too.
February 5, 20206 yr Early update on the search at Michigan State - FootballScoop Sounds like MSU has already swung and missed... sources tell FootballScoop Luke Fickell has already evaluated the opportunity and is not inclined to jump at this time. Also mentions Narduzzi telling them no as well. Fick was on Sirius XM ESPN Radio today and mentioned that he was surprised with the news of MD retiring and that he has had no talks with anyone at MSU. Also stated that if a move isn't good for his family, it isn't good for him. Wrapped up the interview by talking about how UC just signed a top 40 class and the best in school history. Thinking this one might be Tressel for 2020 then a different direction after as he navigates through the mess that the athletic department is in right now between lawsuits, potential violations, and new leadership at the top of the AD and university. Other names mentioned for this job: Marvin Lewis Matt Campbell Pat Shurmur Butch Jones Robert Saleh Jim McElwain
February 5, 20206 yr I heard today that Michigan State is facing possible NCAA sanctions. Plus they have not recruited well the past couple years. It is not a situation Fickell should move to. Fickell is positioning himself to be a successor at a bell cow program. Anything less and he stays at Cincinnati.

Fickell is positioning himself to be a successor at a bell cow program. Anything less and he stays at Cincinnati. He thought he had another year at Sparty but wanted to leave on his terms. I’ve been saying for over a year they should have gotten rid of him and went after Fickell. Now the program got completely blindsided and it’s more than likely too late to get Fickell. Sparty put themselves in this situation and needs to write a blank check to fix it. For what it’s worth I think Dantonio wants Mike Tressel to take over but I don’t see it past a one year interim tag.

February 6, 20206 yr Author What have you heard about the NCAA issues? Pretty much the same as everyone else. Will the NCAA be able to prove anything who knows? Dantonio certainly left on his terms, before being told to leave from what I’m hearing. The thought of his legacy being tarnished was enough for an abrupt retirement. He’s far from cleared though.
February 7, 20206 yr Luke Fickell was at Cincinnati St. Xavier tonight as a speaker for the Bombers’ Athletics Hall of Fame night. Not that it has any indication on his job, but that at least answers the question of where he’s at (Cincinnati or East Lansing).

Was asked if he was leaving for MSU or not: His response: "My wife makes the big decisions in my family."

February 7, 20206 yr Smart man Also a good way to not answer the question. :lol2: Under different circumstances, I think UC would be worried about losing him to MSU. That's not a move he's going to make right now, IMO.
February 7, 20206 yr Author As of last night Sparty hasn’t reached Fickell. My guess is because he had the speaking engagement and the fact he’s his own agent. I’m betting he gets that 517 area code today.
