Onside kick alternative

Featured Replies

4th and 15 from the 25 would seem to be a lot more makable than even the old onside kick rule.

So what is everyone's thought on this possible rule change?

Much better than what currently exists. I used to look forward to onside kicks, but the probability now is stupidly low it has rendered it almost meaningless.

Maybe tinker with the yard line you attempt from.

This.

How often would teams convert a 4th and 15? 1 in 15 or so? That’s too high of a percentage for me. The current rules suck because there is next to zero chance a team recovers, but I’d like to see a better solution than 4th and 15 personally. We’ll see how it works out in the XFL though and I may change my mind.

Move it to the 35 so the team is at the 50 if they convert. It'll make things more interesting to be 1 first down away from field goal range, unless you're the Bengals... Randy B would miss that kick.

I guess I'm just nostalgic for the old kickoff and onside kickoff rules (just the way they used to be in the old days). I understand the risk of injuries. I understand that those days are gone. Hopefully, head protection and body padding will get so much better that they could bring back the old rules...wishful thinking.

With analytics I am sure there is method to the madness, so to speak. 1 in 15 in is less than 7%. You think that is too high of a conversion rate?

Randy B made 87% of his field goals this year, good for 5th in the NFL. Longest made was 57 yards.

I like the 25, it's a huge penalty if you go for it and don't get it...as it should be. You get it and you'll be near midfield.

I think I like 4th and 20 better, 15 yards with today's offenses seems too easy.

How many times will a defensive penalty let team attempting keep the ball?

Think of all of the penalties that are automatic first downs. I think that would need to be addressed...on the attempt make a penalty like defensive holding a yardage penalty only not auto 1st down.

But he was 33% from 50 or more, ranking him 30th in the NFL for the year from that distance. He is 45% in his career.

11 NFL kickers did not miss from 50 plus last year (granted Randy had more chances than some of them).

In the NFL the kicker can be an extra weapon, in Cincinnati it isn't.

If the defense keeps committing penalties, keep enforcing them until a 1st Down is gained.

I do agree that there shouldn't be any automatic first downs, maybe outside of a personal foul.

This isn't a thread about Cincinnati's kicking game, it's about the possible NFL rule change.

I do wonder what the percentage would be for kickers on a field goal attempt, if they had two free practice kicks right before it like Bullock had on the 57 yarder he made lol. Bullock misses both of those attempts, but because of a timeout and a penalty. On his third chance he made it, and now he has a career long that looks really good lol.

Whoops sorry just saw this. I honestly don’t mind if they change the rule, but I think it should be 20 yards to gain to get the first down. 15 yards is just not long enough, and with all the rules favoring passing in the NFL. That just seems like it helps the losing team more than it should.

Way too high imo. I think 2-3% would be enough to keep intrigue in the onside kick, but would keep the spirit of the sport. I get it would be exciting, but for me personally it would take away a little bit when looking at the grand scheme of the sport over time. I don’t inherently think there is anything wrong with the idea and I wouldn’t protest it, but it wouldn’t be my preference. In a perfect world going back to the old onside kick rules would be the best solution, but obviously that would never happen due to safety concerns.
