Onside kick alternative

Featured Replies

I like the 25, it's a huge penalty if you go for it and don't get it...as it should be. You get it and you'll be near midfield.

I think I like 4th and 20 better, 15 yards with today's offenses seems too easy.

How many times will a defensive penalty let team attempting keep the ball?

Think of all of the penalties that are automatic first downs. I think that would need to be addressed...on the attempt make a penalty like defensive holding a yardage penalty only not auto 1st down.

This is where I’m at too. You know teams with a big tall receiver are just going to throw a jump ball 15 yards downfield and hope for a PI.

I believe the 4th and 15 percentage was close to 25%. Onside kicks are less than 10%.

Way too high imo. I think 2-3% would be enough to keep intrigue in the onside kick, but would keep the spirit of the sport. I get it would be exciting, but for me personally it would take away a little bit when looking at the grand scheme of the sport over time. I don’t inherently think there is anything wrong with the idea and I wouldn’t protest it, but it wouldn’t be my preference. In a perfect world going back to the old onside kick rules would be the best solution, but obviously that would never happen due to safety concerns.

If that is the case (2-3%), leave it how it is then. That is less than the current conversion rate, which is more in line with the 1 in 15 number.

Conversion rates prior to the rule change was around 20%, which is more in line with NEERFAN's numbers.

My next question would be could a team score on the play? They are trying to convert a 4th and 15, and they throw a td. Does it count for a td? Or do they just get it from the 40? I honestly don’t think they should be allowed to advance past the 15 yards they need. Imo you are just favoring the team that is losing, by making the team that was winning and who’s defense was just on the field and gave up a score. Now they have to come back out and get a key stop. That is giving the losing team to many chances and things in their favor.

It should be 4th and 15 or 4th and 20 with no opportunity to advance it further than the line to gain. This would allow the defense to basically do an all out blitz without fear of giving up a big play. Which truly would make the conversion really tough to get, and doesn’t favor the team that is losing.

Would love a change from a fan perspective but I hate it from a purist point if view.

You’re kicking an onside kick for a reason. You didn’t play well enough and now you’re hoping for a prayer to be answered...

Maybe we should just make 50+ yard field goals worth 5 points ?

It’s a gimmick...

Addressing the “half the distance to the goal” penalty seems more important than this.

I don’t have the numbers so I’ll definitely take your word for it, but those both seem pretty high to me.

4th and 15? Hell the Chiefs may never have to play defense. They'd just keep converting and never give up the ball!
