Is Chuck Smith going to retire?

Featured Replies

First, I have no idea on this but I will say I have heard from a couple of you I consider pretty credible and my sources say their sources come from coaches on the Boyle County football staff.

I hope the answer is no here but I thought this topic deserved its own thread.

In short I was told quote:

"Was told by two coaches that he (Chuck Smith) was done, win or lose."

So I will ask again, is Chuck Smith going to retire?

Wouldn’t surprise me. I’m hearing he has his time in and that WVU with Neal Brown is a real possibility. We’ll see what happens.

Chris Pardue and Smith are very close friends. If I’m not mistaken Smith has not been a head coach without Pardue as his OC since ‘92, if so it can’t be for more than a season or two. Makes a lot of sense for them to go out at the same time.

Will the NCAA allow Chuck to go to WVU? I thought coaches had to be two years removed from a player before they are allowed to coach them in college. With Reese Smith going to WVU, I don't think Chuck can follow him up there...I could be wrong though.

He would have to get an on the field Coaching job I think is how the rule reads. There are only 10 of those spots allowed by the NCAA. A program can have an unlimited number of "support" staff.

I just sent a text to a friend of mine down in Bowling Green while I was on my lunch break and pinged him about this. His response: "Hadn't heard anything about CS until Tuesday. I think every parent I've run into since has mentioned it. South of the parkway's on high alert. Lockdown BS. Lol"

I asked him how legitimate things sound to him, and he said "Can't tell if it's fire, smoke, or just watching for smoke."

Here is the NCAA bylaw being referenced by @LC07. It was added by the NCAA in April 2017:

In football, during a two-year period before a prospective student-athlete's anticipated enrollment and a two-year period after the prospective student-athlete's actual enrollment, an institution shall not employ (or enter into a contract for future employment with) an individual associated with the prospective student-athlete in any athletics department noncoaching staff position or in a strength and conditioning staff position.

This definition includes, but is not limited to, parents, legal guardians, handlers, personal trainers and coaches. An individual who meets this definition retains such status during the enrollment of the prospective student-athlete at the institution.

Correct, but he could be hired as the Lb'rs coach for instance.

Didn't mean for that to come off as challenging what you were saying. I believe what you said is correct. I just wanted to reference the actual bylaw for folks.

Just to add more intrigue to the situation........Brandon Smith was home at Boyle County for Thanksgiving/Central game. I wonder if he was at the alumni practice on Thanksgiving???

And for the record, I’d be shocked if Brandon Smith wasn’t choice 1, 2 and 3 for Boyle County if Chuck Smith is indeed retiring.

And honestly, no one would know Brandon’s choice until he made it.

If Chuck Smith were to leave, one would have to think that Brandon Smith would be the first call. It'd be his job to turn down.

It's almost too perfect of timing for it not to happen.

Brandon is ready and proven. Boyle is still loaded and rebuilt. Chuck obviously wanted to coach out this departing Senior class. The road for Brandon in 5A is going to only get more difficult. CS's longtime assistant just retired.

I had a former boss of 21 years and he’s also a good friend tell me about 1 1/2 to 2 months ago that Chuck and Chris Pardue both were going to retire at seasons end and that Brandon Smith would be the next head coach at Boyle, did I mention that he fishes with Pardue on a regular basis and they’re pretty good friends, I hadn’t given it much thought until today but this guy used to be a board member at Boyle and is a reliable source, at the time I ask if this was the gospel and he said it was what he was hearing.

I have heard that Pardue is retiring at the end of the school semester (December). Also heard that Coach Hester is retiring at the end of the school year. Don't know it that is true about Coach Hester but that's what I heard.
