Had this discussion with my wife today. We both agreed it is not horror movie.

No, not horror.

It sure felt like it was when I first saw it in a theater at 10 or 11 years old. When that head popped out of the hole in the boat and the entire theater screamed in unison, that was a quintessential horror movie moment.

 

It doesn't feel like that now though.

I suppose it depends on the definition, but there is something about movies not set in darkness which disqualify them from being of the horror variety. You don't see Jason Vorhees stuck in rush hour traffic.

Reading several definitions after Googling "Definition Horror Movie", Jaws definitely fits the genre.

To me there is a difference between Horror and Thriller. I feel like Jaws is a Thriller.

Everyone is desensitize in 2019. You got go way back and remember this movie was mid 70's. Before all the throat slashing movies such as Friday 13th and such. I remember going to the see Jaws and even the first scene with the girl swimmer was pretty scary. Yes when visited the beach that summer I recall being scared of sharks don't think a thriller movie would scare me enough to worry about getting eaten by a great white..
