Which schools play varsity starters in JV games?

Featured Replies

My only issue is when a team starts seniors in a JV game and that seems to happen a lot.

I don’t have an issue with seniors playing JV, as long as they are actually a Jv caliber player. There are some teams with kids who would go the entire year without the player seeing the field.

My question is why is it an issue for you? Since football teams don't cut players like basketball or baseball. Why shouldn't a senior get to play in an actual game if they are not playing at all in varsity games? Football is a long season, where you practice a ton but only get a guaranteed 10 games to play. So if a player is a senior and decides to stick it out and stay on the team even if they are not good enough to play varsity. Then why shouldn't they get a chance to play? If they are a senior and not getting any reps in games with varsity. It is not like a JV team is adding a stud then by a senior playing, if that senior wasnt good enough to play varsity as a senior.

The only time I'd take issue with a senior playing JV is if by doing so, it's taking away snaps from a JV kid that will never play. If the senior is only on varsity because he is a senior, but doesn't play, I have zero issue with them playing JV.

Good point but I have seen teams that have seniors playing that were also getting minutes on Friday night.

In that case yes I agree with you. However, I believe in most cases if a team plays a senior on JV it is not because of a competitive advantage. It may be because a kid may have decided to come out and play football for the first time in his life his senior year. Or a kid who may eventually be in the varsity roatation at some point but missed a lot of time due to injury and hadn't played in any games or scrimmages yet and just came back from the injury. So he gets used in a jv game just to get him some action before getting in the rotation with varsity and not playing Jv anymore after that. I think in most cases if a senior plays JV it is usually done for the right reasons and rarely so someone can have a competitive advantage for a Jv game.

Newport does, but that's because they are one way starters and want to play the other side of the ball.

Ballard’s starting Varsity QB started at QB for the JV vs St X.

How old is he? Was the back up available?

I think he’s a sophomore. And yes, the backup was available. The backup is actually really good and was the starter earlier this season.

There are lots of scenarios where the "starter" is only in that spot because there is no one else better then him. Just starting doesn't mean the kid ready to play at a high level. JV ball is important for that type of player to develop quickly enough to be viable on Friday.

I have zero problems with how any team handles JV. There are many variables to consider as to what is the “right” way to handle it. To me, it is up to the head coach to handle the JV situation to do what is best for his team. JV is purely developmental. While the JV records are meaningless, the reps are valuable.

The world is different now but when I played no seniors and no starters played JV.

Isn't there a playing time limit in football? I was thinking a player is limited to 6 quarters of playing time. If that is the rule, no player can play all 4 quarters in the varsity game and also play all 4 quarters of JV.

8 quarters is the limit.

8 quarters is the limit.

Thank you.

So I guess the only player a team has to be concerned about is the freshman that also plays varsity.
