I have been around a merger. They are watched closely and monitored by the state because in most cases the state helps funding. In this case it is apparent they did not. All funds are frozen and only emergency purchases are approved. Not to build a new field house for the football team. You build the school first and then if you have the funding you build a new football complex just like Belfry did.

 

You have absolutely NO idea what you are talking about. The fieldhouse was in the works long before the merger. It was part of them trying to lure a great coach. They had already bought the building before Jaggers was ever hired. I talked with a few coaches who were interested in the job for THAT reason. The merger did not come up until this year when HHS's super decided to retire.

A mercer fan said earlier that the merge had been being talked about for a long time. Just took place this year. Why did the sytem allow this knowing that there was going to be a merge anytime?

I have no doubt that in the begining this merger had it's good intentions and had nothing to do with sports. I believe that. But as time went on the idea emerged about a football team that would bring a state championship to the community and bring them together and It must be done now because next year we will be in 5-A. Can you tell me that conversation did not take place?

First of all, I am the person who mentioned how long they had talked about it. I'm not a Mercer fan. I lived there for 3 years and have/had relatives in and around there.

 

Do you or anyone else understand the word "talk" in use of such items? People talk a lot, for a long time. It's called Beauracracy (sp?). A church talks for 10 years about building. Some do it. Some don't. For some, the time passes and they did nothing.

 

The same is true in local government. They didn't know they were going to merge at anytime. They had talked about the possibility. Big difference. What's more when you talk about something for 10, 15 years how do you know this is the year?

It's okay if you think it stinks. It's okay if you have to feel that this gives you some kind of moral high ground that you seek.

 

I'll let the facts and the data presented stand on it's own and stop trying to talk about logic and data. When someone feels something, it's hard to let the whole body of truth be seen.

I can almost guarantee that winning a state title in football was not discussed in the merger. People didn't realize how good Mercer actually was until 3-4 weeks into the season. No one knew how the team would respond to each other or how the team would respond to their new coaches. This was done very quickly. The merger has been discussed for quite some time, this is the first time the politics worked in Harrodsburg's favor to complete the merge. It happened so fast that if you told people a year ago the schools were merging they'd laugh at you and cuss you out. The field house had been worked on and close to completed when the merger took place and now that it is done, I saw it a few weeks ago and it is smaller than I thought, but a nice facility nonetheless. The new school that they are building will be one of the finest public schools in the state. Yes, their football team will benefit this one year for staying in 2A, but no matter how much anybody whines and complains it's not going to change anything before Friday. I have stated before that Mercer has no excuse if they lose on Friday and I still believe that. They are a great football team and they outmatch Russell and that's coming from someone who has seen Russell play(last Friday vs. Belfry). I understand your anger against having to play the team the caliber of Mercer that is still in the 2A classification, but you still have to play them. Who knows you may shock the world and win, and that would be a great story as well.

 

All this conspiracy theory stuff is funny and sad at the same time because a lot of you were not around when it took place and Mercer County was a very tense place for a couple of months. Mercer parents were worried about their kids losing their spots, Harrodsburg parents were worried about their kids not getting a fair shake. A lot of ugly comments and arguments back and forth made the merger uncomfortable for a lot of people like me who has no ties to the area. Now, a community divided is a community that is on the same page. Everyone benefits from this merger. Kids, parents, teachers, community. The merger was SO MUCH LARGER than football. As was stated earlier, they WERE NOT sitting in the school board meeting plotting ways to make it to Papa John's stadium this year and to think or believe that is an outsiders view into a situation that had absolutely nothing to do with beating Russell on Friday.

Then maybe they should have been panalized by the khsaa and had to field two teams or somthing could have been worked out. The khsaa had no back bone in this one.

Do you know how hard it would be to put Mercer in another class.

 

When Harrodsburg closed there were 9 schools left hunting a game in the middle of 2 year contracts, and some teams did not find anyone. Just think about putting Mercer in another district then there would have been 10 teams that would have had to cancell one game to make room for them. Which would have left several teams hunting games. I know you will say they could have played each other but they would have all been on different dates that would not have matched.

 

The KHSAA has several problems right now, maybe we can get you in there and solve all of our problems. There are alot of other things that they have "no back bone on"
