New field house? They built a new field house for football before the new school???

I believe it was already in the works well before the consolidation. You do understand that public buildings take time to plan and build, appropriate money and such?

 

One Mercer poster said this has been in the planning stages for 15 to 20 years. Read back and you can see it for yourself. I'll bet the field house was big enough to house Mercer and Harrodsburg football teams. You build the school before the new field house. Period.

As far as I know, there is no reason that Mercer couldn't have kept Harrodsburg's staff and students together, as a school, for one more year. Terry Yeast could have coached a Harrodsburg football team exactly as he did last season.

 

Anyway, can we please get back to the original topic ... how much better is this Mercer County football team because of the merger?

 

 

It's a good question. Let me ask: "If your business is going under in the near future. You know a bigger business wants to take over. Do you go out and spend a whole year's budget when you can become a part of the new company and forego the expenses of duplicating what the other guy is doing for half the cost?"

 

I think finances and the inevitibility of it all is what drove this consolidation more than sports.

I mentioned this in the other thread westsider but here's a thought. Does anyone know the financial situation of the Harrodsburg School System? Harrodsburg was not under the Mercer County Board but was an independent with their own board, their own tax base and their own school system. I know for a fact that Harrodsburg residents fought the merger idea for what seems like about 15 to 20 years. If they didn't have the finances to keep it going for two or more years until the buildings were ready they may have seen no choice. I might add it may have made more sense to consolidate the pools of money and use the Harrodsburg increase to Mercer as the starting money for the new school(s). Without consolidation, where does the building money come for the three years?

 

Just some thoughts about it.

How could the KHSAA move them up when everyone's schedule was already filled?

 

Then maybe they should have been panalized by the khsaa and had to field two teams or somthing could have been worked out. The khsaa had no back bone in this one.

like i said prioritys weren't in order before the merge was made, khsaa screwed up by not stepping in and making it right some how. I mean they should know what to do, thats why they are there.

Then again the merger of Danville/Boyle has been out there for the same amount of time.

 

For Harrodsburg/Mercer the time to talk had ended and the time to start was now.

 

I have a question, how many on here have been around systems mergers before?

 

The current county I'm in just saw the merger of 4 County High Schools into

2, all within less than a year. There had been talk for 2 years but most logistics can't begin until it actually happens. When merger began it meant some kids were in temporary places until everything was up and running. It had to be done and saved the county millions of dollars over the last 3 years.

 

Meanwhile our city system is on the verge of talking "reversion." That is where they go from city to township and there is nothing the county can do about it. When it happens, the county has to absorb the city's schools and government and costs. I'm hoping it doesn't happen but we've been talking about it for 4 years.

 

Mergers aren't some quick fix, all problems solved events. They are a logistical nightmare that you begin to work out, piece by piece. There is the pain of loss for those losing their identity and the pain of those leading who have to suddenly deal with a bigger school system than they signed on to take care of. It is a difficult task that has probably been made a little more bearable by the success of the football team.

 

Until you go through a merger, disolution of your school, or any such quagmire you probably won't understand. Period. :thumb:

Your not reading all the data are you?

 

The state said they would only build a new school the size of current enrollment and projections of that enrollment. In other words they would build a school about 200 kids short. When consolidation took place, they will now build the school based on combined enrollment and growth. Please read all the commentary before jumping to conclusions.

I have been around a merger. They are watched closely and monitored by the state because in most cases the state helps funding. In this case it is apparent they did not. All funds are frozen and only emergency purchases are approved. Not to build a new field house for the football team. You build the school first and then if you have the funding you build a new football complex just like Belfry did.

For the record...I do not live in Harrodsburg or have anything to do with MC. But I do know the situation very well...

 

And to answer your question...all of the above. Donations, bonds, etc.

 

Also, the field house was built for all of Mercers sports. It houses the weight rooms, track, girls and boys locker rooms and surface. It also houses the training room. I have had the pleasure of seeing it and it is special.
