Bottom line: you aren't here to see the positive impact this merge is having on all students....athlete or not. The level of interaction has been good for the future of this community and every kid involved.

You aren't qualified to pass a judgement on the long overdue merge unless you are from here. This merge is bigger than athletics, and our community is and will be better for it. Unless you are experiencing it first hand, your posts lack validity and perspective and would best be kept to yourself.

Well said. The superintendents of both schools only consulted with themselves. :flame: I knew the whole, it's not fair debate would creep up. The sad part is that those close to the situation know that it has absolutely nothing to do with any sports whatsoever. The merger was the most hotly debated issue in Mercer County for quite some time. It was done extremely quickly, much to the dismay of many Harrodsburg parents. Harrodsburg students staged a walkout last May in protest of the merger and were promptly suspended. As was stated earlier, what the KHSAA decided to do with the merger has absolutely no bearing on the actual schools merging. I understand everyone's angst about it not being fair, but it is what it is and after the merger, the Mercer County Titans have absolutely no excuse to not win the 2A state championship.

OK, joe and coldweather, let's admit it, the merger was all about beating Russell in football. We got the Harrodsburg Board of Ed to vote for the merger, we also got the Harrodsburg parents to hold a fake meeting to discuss why the merger was a horrible idea, and then got most of the Harrodsburg students to walk out of class protesting the idea of merger.

Then we uprooted 200 students to bus them back and forth from campus to campus. Yada, Yada , Yada.

 

So now we have come clean, and I feel better about it.

I don't know of any Mercer person who said what you claim. You sure do seem to claim to know a lot about a situation that you are not involved in. The State and Federal Governments say they are 100% mergered. All of the teacher's pay checks sure do come from the same place. Report cards all say Mercer County. There is one school board.

 

You have no idea what was and was not above board. Was it rushed? Yes, I think it was. But not to make a better football team like you seem to think. Mercer was going to build a new High School anyway. They had an chance to take advantage of a one time funding opportunity. It was going to be a 3 phase project that was going to take 8-10 years to complete all that they wanted to do. By merging the funding was increased quite substantially, my understanding is that it will now take only 3-5 years to do all that they want to do. They did the smart thing, they took advantage of it and merged immediately.

 

What the KHSAA decided was their decision not Mercer's. But you go ahead with your conspiracy theory.

I have been in this business for a long time and I never knew that football was that important in this state to go to all this trouble just to win a championship. It is good to see.

You know there are a lot of things that KHSAA monitors. Look how they make students sit out a year of sports if they transfer under sertain conditions. If you can't figure out what is going on here you can't think for yourself. By Mercer BGP members own admission the only thing that changed 100% was the establishment of a football team. Why else would that be the only physical 100% change completed at Mercer? Aren't academics first? Sure you can say Harrodsburg school district no longer exists. True. But why has nothing else changed except the establishment of a football team to win a Championship. The KHSAA screwed this up by allowing a school to have an unfair advantage. No one would have said a word had they planned ahead kept two football teams and then merged next year into the proper division. This whole thing was hocky from the get go. The private non private thing is nothing compared to this.

 

I'm just sick of listening to people try to justify that this merger was above board. Okay I've got it off my chest. I'm done with this subject. Let's play some football.

There was no reason that the Mercer County system couldn't have kept the two schools separate until the new building is ready. Just because the school systems merged didn't mean that a consolidation had to be done immediately, especially since the students aren't housed in one facility.

They also wanted the kids together. Keeping all of the students seperated would not have helped with the merger. Like stated earlier this wasn't welcomed with open arms in the community. This TEAM has brought a divided community together.

I heard to not go ahead & advance in class was it would cause scheduling problems .Did they not have to change the schedule to move them to the west? How could they play the same teams they would have played had they not merged & be on the other side of the bracket?

Mercer has been ranked #1 since midseason ... who in the heck has been picking them to lose?

No one has a problem with the two systems merging. Some do have a problem with students housed in separate buildings (with limited interaction throughout the day) competing in a merged athletic program and benefitting from the numbers advantage.

I mentioned this in the other thread westsider but here's a thought. Does anyone know the financial situation of the Harrodsburg School System? Harrodsburg was not under the Mercer County Board but was an independent with their own board, their own tax base and their own school system. I know for a fact that Harrodsburg residents fought the merger idea for what seems like about 15 to 20 years. If they didn't have the finances to keep it going for two or more years until the buildings were ready they may have seen no choice. I might add it may have made more sense to consolidate the pools of money and use the Harrodsburg increase to Mercer as the starting money for the new school(s). Without consolidation, where does the building money come for the three years?

 

Just some thoughts about it.

I don't know how else to explain this. Harrodsburg school system no longer exists. The schools are merged. There is one Mercer County School System. Everything in the high school is merged.

The financial reasoning has been explained. Just keep slamming them for using two buildings to try and keep from overcrowding.

Yeah, they are going to do some shuffling to try and cut down on the bussing back and forth. The new school will be ready for 2008.

So you all really, truly believe that all of this has been done simply so that Mercer will win the football state championship and no other reason? That somewhere, the Harrodsburg Board of Education and Superintendent sat down together and said "You know, I bet if we merged with Mercer, next year our football kids will lift a trophy at Papa John's"...
