Declaring for the NBA Draft

I know the discussion is that Richards definitely isn’t ready and that’s probably true, but why is the tone from some that he shouldn’t even be testing the waters? It would be foolish to not give it a shot with the current rules.

Fair question Bobby, I think for some players it’s obvious they need to return, but if you’re born 6’10” or above you can go ask scouts what they think.

I’m sorry but just can’t see it happening.

Can't see what happening? You can't see him getting better and getting to the potential he has?

Potential is having tools that may improve over a period of time and this kid just doesn’t have enough tools.

He has more tools than PJ Washington has. He has an even higher ceiling than Washington. Washington is now about to be a top 20 possibly top 15 pick.

Can’t Cal provide most of this?

These players these days have all kinds of players in their ears. Yeah Cal could tell him exactly what NBA guys will tell him. But at the same time I'm sure Richard's just like most people have friends, family and others in his ear telling him completely something different. So sometimes it's easier and hits more when actual NBA guys basically tell you straight up what you need to get better at. Which chances are is the same thing coaches have already told them, but just needed to hear it for themselves.

Totally disagree.

Totally disagree.

After Washington's freshman season. It was almost impossible to see him developing the outside shot like he did. The guy couldn't hit anything and didn't even have confidence to take them. Then at the free throw line we saw how he could get rattled easy and lose confidence. He really didn't have any post moves, and didn't have his unstoppable hook he showed this year. Shoot even most of this season Washington didn't show much until late January when he turned it on.

Montgomery has shown he is a very good and aggressive rebounder. He can block shots, is confident to shoot the jumper and has good form. It simply didn't fall in his limited minutes. I believe I even saw where if you look at what his stat line would be over 40 minutes. He would average a double double. His ceiling is definitely higher than what Washingtons is. Now he needs to show he can reach his potential.

Pretty much goes if you’re really tall and remotely athletic go see if someone will call your name.

I really can't tell if you're just trolling or being serious.

It's not necessarily about seeing if someone will call your name. For a player like Richards it is about hearing what the NBA people think about you and what you need to work on. It might be the exact same thing Coach Cal says, but now the player gets to hear it from the NBA directly. Richards, like many others, is putting his name in knowing he is almost surely going to pull out of the draft but he wants to get a report on himself from the NBA.

So Richards is hoping people blow smoke and then let him down gently?

Saw on Twitter where 233 players have declared for the draft. With only 60 spots available, that's a whole lot of wishful thinking.

175 of those are underclassmen.
