Smallhoops Posted January 30, 2019 Posted January 30, 2019 You may have noticed, as I did, that Ballard reported two scores from games last night, one against KCD and one against Portland Christian. I inquired of Coach Renner, who reported that they split the team into two squads to play both games last night (both were away games). He indicated that Ballard was short a few games and he wanted to get the permissible 30 games scheduled to give some players who have not played as much as he had hoped an opportunity to see some true action. He said he had split the team before, although he did not remember ever doing it to play 2 games the same night. The plan worked, as Ballard won both games by more than 25 points. One of the highlights of the Portland Christian game was the appearance in the game by Sam Ajagbe, who not only played but scored 2 points. Ajagbe is the Ballard manager who has received a lot of attention for his outstanding work as Ballard's manager. Ajagbe and his story have been covered in the Courier-Journal and elsewhere. A really nice reward for an outstanding young man.
TheDeuce Posted January 30, 2019 Posted January 30, 2019 That's awesome for Sam! Glad he got to play!
Big Fundamental Posted January 30, 2019 Posted January 30, 2019 Excellent story! Thanks for reporting.

Smallhoops Posted January 30, 2019 Author Posted January 30, 2019 Just a question, did Coach Renner have to get approval from KHSAA to do this ? I don't know. He did not say anything about having to get approval.
HoopJunkie Posted January 30, 2019 Posted January 30, 2019 Rennet isn’t afraid of anything. I remember watching him leave a game to get popcorn during an LIT game against Fern Creek a couple years ago when they wouldn’t come out of a zone.
PP1 Posted January 31, 2019 Posted January 31, 2019 Let us also keep in mind that we are talking about Portland Christian and KCD as well. Not sure how gutsy a move that was.
Oldercoach Posted January 31, 2019 Posted January 31, 2019 Ballard - 842 boys (with numerous titles and statewide traditional top program) KCD - 148 boys (no basketball rep) Portland Christain - 60 boys (no basketball rep) QED
HoopJunkie Posted February 1, 2019 Posted February 1, 2019 Let us also keep in mind that we are talking about Portland Christian and KCD as well. Not sure how gutsy a move that was. Wasn’t necessarily a comment about his guts. But rather his open mindedness. How many coaches would split their team up to play 2 regular season games on the same night at 2 different places? I doubt there are more than a couple.
PP1 Posted February 1, 2019 Posted February 1, 2019 Rennet isn’t afraid of anything. Not many coaches would fear a split squad with Portland Christian.
HoopJunkie Posted February 1, 2019 Posted February 1, 2019 Not many coaches would fear a split squad with Portland Christian. But many coaches being the control freaks that they are wouldn’t allow half their kids to go somewhere any play someone. Anyone. Is this really worth debating?
ConverseAllStar Posted February 1, 2019 Posted February 1, 2019 If you notice the box scores, some of the Ballard kids played in both games that night. They must have been played at different times.
Smallhoops Posted February 1, 2019 Author Posted February 1, 2019 KCD and Portland Christian are pretty close (about 3 miles apart).
The Professor Posted February 1, 2019 Posted February 1, 2019 Must be nice to have the enrollment to do this. If Owsley County split teams neither team would have subs. 110 boys in the high school, the only high school in the county.
