article 14th Region Week 9 Review: Everything Stays The Same

Mother nature finally showed up and does what she always does, cancelling games. Because of that, the games that got played wouldn't make any difference in the rankings this week.

 

1) Knott County Central (15-7): The Patriots had a good week but a not so good week if that makes any sense? The Patriots picked up two wins and extended their win streak to 10 straight games. Those wins came by defeating Letcher County Central 60-43 and Middlesboro 57-45 in the all a state tournament. The Patriots had took an earlier season defeat at Middlesboro, losing 45-40. The Patriots loss last week came in horrible blowout fashion, losing 65-32 to Walton-Verona in the second round of the all a state tournament.

 

The Patriots will look to get back on the winning side of things but they will have to do so away from Hindman. The Patriots will be at June Buchanan on Wednesday. Friday at Perry County Central and Saturday at Wolfe County.

 

2) Breathitt County (14-6): The Bobcats extended their win streak to 6 straight after picking up 3 straight wins last week. Those three wins came by the form of double digits. Breathitt County got things started off by defeating Buckhorn 75-62, defeating Wolfe County in a high scoring affair 98-86, and defeating Sayre 54-44.

 

Breathitt County will look to keep the momentum and win streak going this week but it won't be easy, Tuesday at Hazard, Thursday at home against Cordia and Saturday vs. Jackson County at Buckhorn in the Scott Blank Classic.

 

3) Perry County Central (10-10): The Commodores, seem to have gotten things turned around. At the start of the season and most of the way through it, going 5-7 in the last part of 2018. Since the new year started the Commodores have gone 5-3 with a current 4 game win streak. Perry County Central cruised past Wolfe County 104-76 and Leslie County 72-60 last week.

 

The Commodores will look to continue the momentum this week. They are at home for most of the week. Hosting Owsley County on Tuesday, Red Bird on Thursday, Knott County Central on Friday and they will be participating in the Scott Blank Classic at Buckhorn on Saturday but a TBA opponent is listed.

 

4) Hazard (18-4): Hazard won their only game last week, defeating Sheldon Clark 56-47. That win extends the Bulldogs win streak to 4 straight and they have won 11 of their last 12 games.

 

Hazard will host Breathitt County on Tuesday in a big #4 vs. #2 showdown. They will be at Barbourville on Thursday.

 

5) Buckhorn (15-7): Buckhorn continues to have success but that success hasn't showed up against the big dogs in the 14th region. Buckhorn would fall to Breathitt County 75-62 last week before cruising past Oneida Baptist Institute 81-48.

 

Buckhorn will look to continue their success this week. They are at Estill County on Monday, hosting Leslie County on Friday and Prestonsburg on Saturday, both in the Scott Blank Classic.

 

 

6) Letcher County Central (11-8): Despite picking up wins, the Cougars have struggled as of late. The last 7 games for Letcher County Central have gone like this, win, loss, win, loss, win, loss, win. In order to win region, you can't have any losses region but first you have to get out of district. If Letcher County Central can't get things turned around, they may just be watching the regional tournament from home.

 

Can Letcher County Central get things turned around this week? Monday hosting Magoffin County, Tuesday at Betsy Layne, Thursday at Pike County Central, Friday hosting Jenkins and Saturday hosting Estill County.

 

7) Cordia (3-16): The Lions finally got a win and snapped a 5 game losing streak. The Lions defeated Madison Southern 65-60 on the road last week ending, said 5 game losing streak. The Lions before that, however, suffered back to back losses, losing 77-73 to Southwestern and 107-86 to Harlan Independent.

 

Can Cordia keep up the winning ways this week? They host June Buchanan on Monday, travel to Breathitt County on Thursday.

 

8) Wolfe County (7-12): The Wolves dropped two of their three games last week. The Wolves took a hard 104-76 beat down from Perry County Central on their own home floor. The Wolves would follow that up with a 98-86 loss to Breathitt County, also on their own home court. Wolfe County would salvage the week by picking up a road win at Owsley County 56-47.

 

Wolfe County will be at home on Tuesday hosting Red Bird. Thursday the Wolves will take to the road at Powell County and Saturday Wolfe County will be at home hosting #1 Knott County Central.

 

9) Powell County (6-12): The Pirates won their only game last week, cruising past Lee County 88-50. With that win, the pirates pretty much have the #1 seed locked down for the district tournament.

 

The Pirates will be at home all this week. Monday hosting Jackson City. Wednesday hosting Woodford County, Thursday hosting Wolfe County and Saturday hosting Williamstown.

10) Estill County (6-14): The Engineers split their two games last week, defeating Owsley County 55-41 before falling to Bath County 55-53 in a barn burner. Estill County was scheduled to travel to Fleming County this past Saturday but due to weather that game was canceled.

 

Estill County will be at home on Monday hosting Buckhorn. Thursday at Western Hills and Saturday at Letcher County Central.

 

11) Owsley County (9-11): The Owls dropped their two games last week, falling 55-41 to Estill County and 56-47 to Wolfe County. Both were on the Owls own home court.

 

12) Leslie County (3-13): The losses keep coming for the Eagles, which is a bad sign. The Eagles would pick up a 73-57 win over Jackson City but would drop their very next two games. Losing 63-51 to Letcher County Central and 72-60 to Perry County Central.

 

13) Jackson City (5-13): The Tigers dropped their lone game last week. Falling 73-57 to Leslie County.

 

14) June Buchanan (5-13): The Crusaders won their only game last week, cruising past Piarist School 79-30.

 

15) Lee County (6-19): Lee County split their two games last week. Falling 88-50 to district foe, Powell County but edging out Jenkins 73-69.

 

16) Riverside Christian (0-0): No games for the Rams this season.
