I'm not saying Rivera isn't deserving, because he is. However there are many that have been just as deserving.

But like you said, he shouldn't have been the first to do so.

Shaughnessy from the Boston paper turned in a ballot with just Rivera checked. If there was anyone who would not go with Rivera to make sure he wasn't unanimous, he's the guy. Apparently the old-school writers didn't communicate through group text to decide who would be the one no vote for Mo.

Now that the unanimous barrier has been broken maybe the ones that deserve that honor will get it from now on.
MJAlltheWay24 Posted January 23, 2019 Posted January 23, 2019 Baseball HOF voting is so strange to me. Guy gets 25% of the vote 10 years ago and then gets 85% of the vote now. What changed? Edgar Martinez certainly didn't get better or add to his stats during those ten years.
Voice of Reason Posted January 23, 2019 Posted January 23, 2019 I am not shocked to see Rivera get the 100%. More surprising to me was Halladay at 85%. Schilling's stats are more Hall of Fame friendly and he still isn't in.

But your comment made me go back and look at the numbers, and I'd have to say I agree with you. If Halladay is in, Schilling should absolutely be in.

Some baseball "analysts" believe Halladay had a factor going for him that NO ONE would ever wish to be in play at his age. Probably some truth to it. I think both Schilling and Halladay feel like Hall-of-Famers to me, and while Halladay had that unfortunate event that may or may not have played a factor, Schilling is a legendary horse's backside and we know that plays a factor with many of the voters.

I'm certain Schilling's relationship with the media played an even bigger part in him not getting in, than Halladay's death had in him getting in. I do think this is the beginning of the resetting of some of the traditional numbers that pitchers needed to get in, especially wins. With 5 and even 6 man rotations, and most outings being 6 or 7 innings, pitchers simply aren't going to accumulate numbers like they used.

Cy Young, Ruth, Cobb, Gehrig, Walter Johnson, Mathewson, Lefty Grove, Williams, DiMaggio, Mantle, Mays, Aaron, Koufax, Musial, Bench, Seaver, Griffey Jr. I am glad that someone finally got 100% of the vote but it should have happened long ago. It will be interesting if Jeter gets 100% next year.

It will be interesting if Jeter gets 100% next year. ....and Earle Combs. I like to bring his name up anytime I can because he’s the most famous person from Owsley County! He has a huge picture in his Yankee uniform that covers the left front side of our court house.
