2018 AP All-State Team

Featured Replies

Yeah, yeah it may not be the best football but there are plenty of talented athletes and this is not a team award.

They are also in Northern Kentucky as well, but when your area has no vote those kids get passed over.

Half of the first team offense and defense are from metro Louisville and metro Lexington. I'm counting Scott County and West Jess, which I think both would be considered by a majority as the Lexington area.

I'm fine with the team, but I wouldn't call half of the first team a "handful".

I wouldn't call Scott County, Lexington either. Fayette County is Lexington, not Scott, Jessamine, Franklin, Mercer or Boyle.

8 of 24 first team spots are from Louisville I will agree, probably more than a handful.

0 are from Lexington/Fayette County.

Bowling Green/Glasgow/Franklin-Simpson area has 6 out of 24.

I've also said this lots of times on here over the years, but it bears repeating: The AP polls and All-State and other recognitions they do are severely limited in their scope and breadth.

Only media outlets that subscribe to the AP service — i.e., pay for it — are eligible to vote in the weekly polls and the season-ending All-State teams. It's a very expensive service, and most small media outlets can't (or won't) afford it. As a result, AP voters are clustered around the state's largest population centers. As another result, those All-State teams and weekly polls tend to be heavily biased toward athletes/teams from the state's larger population centers.

Don't read this as me taking a swipe at Aaron Snyder and what his team does at the ADI. I totally get it from his standpoint. Given the limited number of voters around the state, nobody else is going to vote for the kids from their area.

I'm going to go ahead and leave this post from the thread in the Controversial Issues forum right here. Notice how few kids from small-town schools are on this team? Does that mean that there's nobody any good outside of the state's larger population centers?

Someone said they don't consider Scott Co., Jessamine Co., Mercer Co. and certain other areas as "part of Lexington." But they are close enough to where the voters would have had a chance to see those kids. Same goes for Oldham Co. and other areas that are not necessarily metro area, but play in the same districts as metro area teams. Voters can (should) only vote for players they actually have an opportunity to see and be impressed by. And this is why the AP vote fails miserably.

How are Casey McGinness and Chase Estep considered finalists for Mr. Football yet Casey is 2nd team RB and Chase is HM QB? Aren't these both determined by the same people?

And there it is in a nutshell. All State teams = real estate...location, location, location.

Per the HL's Josh Moore, there were only 16 total voters from the AP who voted on the all-state team. I don't know how many did (or more importantly, didn't) nominate players for voting.

The only voter from the NKY area is James Weber, who handles the NKY prep beat for the Enquirer. He's said to me in the past that he's admittedly inconsistent at voting because of the AP's voting deadlines being so difficult to fit in with his writing deadlines in order to cover ALL of the NKY boys and girls prep sports. Regardless, he's frankly the only voice for NKY players in a state where more often than not, each region is convinced that THEIR region IS the best in Kentucky high school sports, regardless of whether or not they feel their region is getting its deserved share of media attention and respect around the state.

I have seen a lot of kids on this list play and I'm may be biased being in the Owensboro area but I am having a hard time believing the following kids weren't deserving of atleast Honorable Mention or better: QB: Drew Hartz (Owensboro Catholic), Will Warren (Owensboro) RB: Von Williams (Owensboro Catholic) Imonte Owsley (Owensboro) WR: Marquel Tinsley (Daviess Co) **Big head scratcher WR: Nick Mills (Owensboro Catholic) DL: Noah Todd (Owensboro Catholic), Diamond Glover (Owensboro) Nikolas De La Cruz (McLean Co)

These are just the few kids that come to mind that when compared to kids on this list should be no doubters for Honorable Mention or better.

Same people, different voting areas.

First team QB was also a Mr. Football finalist.

Second team QB was not eligible for Mr. Football and thus his inclusion has nothing to do with Estep.

What if four of the Mr. Football finalists were RBs? Surely you wouldn't expect all four to be first team.

Were both of the 1st team running backs eligible for Mr. Football? If so and both were not Mr. Football finalists your point does not negate my questions and doesn't make any sense in this scenario.

Tre Bass was not a Mr. Football finalist. It seems fishy that he made the first team as a RB over Casey McGinnesd who was a Mr. Football finalist. I'm sure that's a product of Mr. Football and the All State Team being conducted through separate voting processes by the AP, but it sure smacks of "amateur" when you step back and look at the AP's whole process of selecting the best football players in the state. The Mr. Football and All State voting should have some kind of interrelation.

Associated Press, or Amateur Press?

The Beechwood seniors have won three straight state championships. They have wins over multiple highly ranked teams in higher classes over the past couple years. There are four players on Beechwood who have D1 scholarships. Only one Beechwood player is listed on the AP team and he was honorable mention. The facts don't lead to what we see on this team.

I can't find the name "Reese Smith". Tell me I overlooked it.

In fact nobody from Boyle County. Strange indeed.
